Interpretation of the lines of the hexagram The features symbolize the stages of development of a particular situation expressed in the hexagram. The places from the bottom, “initial”, to the sixth, “upper”, which are occupied by features, are called wei (“positions”). Odd positions (initial, third and fifth) are considered positions of light - yang; even (second, fourth and top) - positions of darkness - yin. Naturally, only in half of the cases does the light line end up in the light position and the shadow line in the shadow position. These cases are called the “relevance” of traits: in them the power of light or darkness “finds its place.” In general this is considered a favorable arrangement of forces, but is not always considered the best.

The first (lower) position marks the beginning, the origin of the process; the second is the apogee of his internal development; the third is a crisis transition from an internal state to an external one; fourth - external process detection; fifth - its maximum manifestation; sixth - completion or rebirth into another process.

The two lower, two middle and two upper positions are occupied by three digrams, corresponding respectively to the three main levels of the universe - earthly, human, heavenly. The three lower and three upper positions are occupied by two trigrams, the first of which symbolizes the internal, advancing, building situation, and the second - the external, retreating, collapsing situation.

Each position has its own name and symbolism.

When analyzing the hexagram, special attention is paid to the second and fifth positions. Each of them is (in the lower or upper trigram) central, i.e. one in which the qualities of the trigram are revealed in the most perfect and balanced way.

If there are light or shadow features in the minority, then they are the center of gravity and control the entire hexagram.

It is worth recalling that when using one or another tool you can get 4 different options for each of the 6 features of the hexagram:

If the resulting hexagram consists of only “young” features, then only it and the text associated with it are considered during interpretation.

Related hexagram

If among the features of the hexagram there is one or more “old” ones, then they are transformed into their opposite (yin - into yang, yang - into yin) and, in addition to the first, the secondary hexagram derived from it in a similar way is considered as expressing the tendency of the subsequent development of the situation, predicted in the first hexagram.

A related hexagram can also indicate a past event that brought you to the present, serve as a warning, indicate a goal, a special relationship or a deep desire - anything that connects you to the main interpretation.

If a hexagram has changing lines, you can interpret them without creating a second, related hexagram.

If there is only one changing line,

Pay attention to its position in the hexagram. Look at the hierarchy of lines, for example, line 6 does not concern the current situation or represents spiritual kinship, and line 5 occupies the central position of the trigram.

If there are two changing lines,

There are only two types of combinations for them. When they are the same, look only at the bottom line. For example, if you have two changing yang lines, read only the lower one, since it contains the essence of the situation and has more power. If one changing line is solid (yang) and the other is broken (yin), look only at the broken line. The yin line shows the inner essence of the situation and therefore has great significance.

If there are three changing lines,

Look only at the center line. This is a consequence of the Taoist principle, according to which it is not the beginning and the end that are important, but the middle.

When there are four lines,

Look at the two unchanging lines. With so many changing lines, integrity lies where there is no change. Of the two solid lines, pay special attention to the top one. This polarizes and distances the situation from us so that we can see it clearly. It was as if we stepped aside and then came back and looked inside.

When there are five lines,

Look at the single solid line. The more changing lines, the more dynamic and dramatic the situation. The line that does not change controls the entire situation.

When there are six changing lines,

Interpret a new, related hexagram. Do not attempt to read the changing lines of the original hexagram, for before you realize it they will have changed to their opposite.

Nuclear hexagram

Inside each hexagram there is another hidden, which is called nuclear, or hidden possibility. It is formed by “unpacking” the four central features, which are divided into two trigrams and then superimposed on each other:

The nuclear hexagram represents a hidden opportunity contained in a situation that can be seen as a goal or a warning.

A new lower trigram is created from lines 2, 3 and 4, and a new upper trigram is created from lines 3, 4 and 5. The nuclear hexagram is built through the superposition of a new outer trigram on a new inner trigram.

If the nuclear hexagram (hidden possibility) allows us to understand what may be hidden in the center of the original hexagram, then the opposite hexagram allows us to understand what is not there. It gives an idea of ​​the complete opposite, helping to focus with greater clarity on the nature of the quality being studied. Based on the theory of yin and yang interaction, the opposite hexagram is made by replacing each weak trait (yin) with a strong trait (yang), and vice versa.

Despite the fact that Barbara Hayslip’s interpretations are the most understandable when mastering fortune telling, I recommend that you do not turn off the display of other texts during interactive fortune telling: gradually over time, comparing different interpretations of the meanings of hexagrams, you will learn to both understand the canonical text and understand what The Book wants to tell you exactly.

How to conduct a I Ching fortune telling session

The session begins with you mentally formulating the question that currently interests you the most and the answer to which you expect from the book.

Then you toss three coins one by one: this must be done six times to get six traits and make a hexagram.

If two or all three coins are up eagle, draw on paper solid line;
if two or all three coins fall up tails- draw intermittent.

The features are located one above the other, starting from below.

After the hexagram is compiled, you should find its number in the table.

To do this, divide it in half and find the upper part among the trigrams placed horizontally, and the lower part vertically. At the intersection point is the number of the hexagram you have drawn.

Where did this fortune-telling come from?

The legendary ruler Xi, who was in power, as is commonly believed, from 2852 to 2737 BC, according to legend, once saw a huge turtle swim out of the river (some sources say about a dragon-horse), on the back of which were inscribed mysterious signs consisting of continuous lines and interrupted in the middle. In their combinations, Fu Xi saw a system of symbols that corresponded to his ideas about the universe, where heaven and earth dominated, from the interaction of which all things and phenomena, living and inanimate, were born. Fu Xi depicted these symbols in the following sequence:

Each of the symbols (trigrams) had its own name, indicated a certain property and expressed a specific image:
1. trigram QIAN (creativity), property - fortress, image - sky;
2. DUY (permission), joyfulness, pond;
3. LI (cohesion), clarity, fire;
4. ZHEN (excitement), mobility, thunder;
5. XUN (refinement), penetration, wind (wood);
6. KAN (immersion), danger, water;
7. GEN (stay), inviolability, mountain;
8. KUN (fulfillment), dedication, earth.

In addition, each individual trigram symbolized the season depending on the movement of the sun and moon.

What is Yijing?

The basis of the I Ching is hexagrams - symbols consisting of two ba gua, two trigrams, i.e. - of six continuous lines and interrupted in the middle.
The possible number of options is 64. This is a much more complex system, covering and reflecting, in accordance with the theory of the “Book of Changes,” the entire world process, all the alternations of situations arising from the interaction and struggle of the forces of light and darkness, tension and compliance, good and evil, situations in which a person finds himself and acts.

It is generally accepted that the lower trigram refers to the inner life, to what is advancing and being created, and the upper one to the external world, to the retreating, to the collapsing.
Since ancient times, there has been a view of hexagrams as combinations of three pairs of features, each of which symbolizes one of the three cosmic potencies: the upper one is heaven, the middle one is human, the lower one is earth.
Already here the difference between the worldview of the ancient Chinese and the views common then and later in many other civilizations is clearly visible: a person participates in the flow of life as an equal to earth and heaven, as an active force, not only dependent, but also capable of influencing the world around him, circumstances, to fate.
And this is the main difference between the “Book of Changes” as an initially purely fortune-telling text from all other fortune-telling systems, where a person is assigned a passive role, where he is predicted to have a fatal course of events, which he cannot change.

So, in the “Book of Changes” there are 64 hexagrams, which, according to ancient commentators, denote all the main life situations.
At the same time, the number of possible variants of code “words” in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule - the carrier of the genetic code of every organism on Earth - is also exactly 64.
But that is not all. The DNA molecule is known to have the shape of a double helix, similar to a twisted rope ladder with millions of rungs.
So, the entire genetic code is built in 19 turns of the spiral, that is, on the 19th turn there is the 64th triplet, or codon, which is the unit of code structure. There is a parallel here with the so-called Metonic cycle, which underlay the ancient Greek calendar. The cycle was equal to 235 lunar months and lasted exactly 19 years. From this coincidence, it was suggested that the turn of the DNA double helix corresponds to the solar year and may contain its information. He backs up his hypothesis with facts: in each living cell there are about three billion turns of the DNA molecule and the first microorganisms appeared on Earth the same number of billions of years ago.
What if DNA turns are nothing more than words, phrases of a “life diary” kept since ancient times, and isn’t the I Ching intended to make this “diary” speak?

In the process of fortune telling using the I Ching, we proceeded from the fact that each hexagram symbolizes one or another life situation that unfolds in time, and each aphorism with the hexagram briefly characterizes one or another stage in the development of this situation.

Aphorisms relating to each of the features of a given hexagram narrate the sequential development of the situation.
The first position (bottom line) characterizes only the emergence of a situation when its typicality has not yet been fully determined.
The second position characterizes the apogee of the internal development of the situation.
The third is a crisis moment, the transition of a situation from internal to external quality.
The fourth is the beginning of the manifestation of the internal process outside.
Fifth - maximum disclosure of the situation to the outside.
The sixth (top line) marks the completion of the development of the situation or its so-called overdevelopment, when it turns into its opposite.

The “Book of Changes I-Ching” or “Canons of Changes” consists of 64 hexagram symbols, each of which expresses a particular life situation in time from the point of view of its gradual development. The symbols consist of six strokes each; and these features indicate successive stages of development of a given situation. The six traits are made up of two trigrams.

The features of hexagrams are of two types: solid and interrupted in the middle. The first symbolize the active state, light, tension, and the second symbolize the passive state, darkness. That is, broken lines symbolize yin, continuous lines symbolize yang. Take a piece of paper and a pen. Take 3 identical coins.

Each of the trigrams has its own name, indicates a certain property and expresses a specific image:

How to tell fortunes using the Book of Changes?

To find the interpretation of your hexagram in the table, mentally divide your hexagram into two equal parts (trigrams): top and bottom. Then, at the intersection of these figures, you look for the number of your hexagram in the table. All that remains is to read the interpretation of the dropped symbol by clicking on the number and think about how correctly it describes your life situation.

Sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we do not notice the simplest and most obvious solution to our problem.

There is no need to be upset if the meaning of the compiled hexagram touches upon facts that are unpleasant for you or simply does not reflect all your expectations. Just like life itself, fortune telling cannot contain only pleasant aspects: after all, fortune telling is a reflection of life, its mirror.

ATTENTION: You cannot turn to the Book if your plan can harm others or its implementation is associated with unworthy means. Interpretation of hexagrams (modern)

01. Qian. Creation.

The symbol consists of six yang traits. A good sign. This is a masculine hexagram, meaning the month of April and spring hopes. But be careful! You are at the top of the mountain, and you have no way to go down. So be vigilant and smart while you're up there. In no later than six months, expect major changes. Time favors your endeavors. There is a certain amount of uncertainty in your personal life; it is necessary to clarify it. If your desire is reasonable and modest, it will certainly come true.
