    Do-it-yourself automatic swing gates. Do-it-yourself swing gates Making your own gates

    Swing gates are one of the most common, as their cost is much lower compared to sliding, sliding or lifting ones. They are quite easy to install and can be metal or wood. You can make them yourself if you strictly follow the directions, drawings and instructions, and also have the necessary materials and tools.

    Swing gates: types and design features

    Based on their design features, there are two-leaf and single-leaf gates. Often in garages, hangars and warehouses they use a combined version - with two doors and a gate. This significantly saves space and materials for creating a separate entrance.

    Garages usually have gates with two leaves and a wicket.

    In most cases, we find structures made of metal sheets or wooden picket fences, and only in some public places (hospitals, government organizations and institutions, schools, kindergartens, etc.) - forged, tubular or lattice. They can also be mechanical and automatic.

    1. Metal gates can be made of corrugated sheets, aluminum (cheaper, but have a shorter service life) or steel sheets with a thickness of 1 to 5 mm. The latter are resistant to various damages, but are very heavy, so they require stronger support posts. Swing gates made of corrugated sheets are an excellent example of a reliable, durable and aesthetically attractive design that can be made in almost a few days from a minimal amount of material. The disadvantage of metal gates is their susceptibility to corrosion if not properly maintained.

      Metal swing gates are durable and reliable, but are susceptible to corrosion

    2. Wooden products are durable and reliable, and have a beautiful appearance. Their advantages are reasonable price and long service life, and disadvantages are a low degree of fire resistance and susceptibility to rotting.

      Wooden swing gates look beautiful, but have a low degree of fire resistance

    3. Very often you can find a combined option - steel supports with metal doors, covered with wooden boards, which also serve as an additional element of strength.
    4. Automatic swing gates with an electric drive simplify the process of opening and closing them, since this does not have to be done manually. The principle of operation of the electric drive is the operation of a gearbox, which drives the lever that controls the swing gate. Typically, the automatic installation includes a signal light, an electrical unit, photocells and the lock itself.

      Automatic swing gates are often made from corrugated sheets

    Electric drives in automatic designs are divided into three types:

    1. Lever. They are equipped with a curved lever that sets the doors in motion. This is a simple and inexpensive drive that meets all the requirements for strength and reliability. It allows you to open gates weighing about 1 ton.
    2. Underground. They are quite difficult to install and subsequently maintain, so they are rarely used.
    3. Linear. They give swing gates an aesthetic appearance due to the fact that the lever is tightly mounted to a metal or wooden leaf. They have a large power reserve, so they are more expensive than lever ones.

    Swing gate device

    The structure consists of a frame made of a round or square pipe of a certain diameter and cross-section and valves, each of which may contain:

    The optimal gate width is 3 meters. This distance is sufficient for entry of any type of passenger car and even a truck. The height of the gate without taking into account the rise above the ground usually reaches 2 m.

    Preparing for the construction of swing gates: drawings and sketches

    You must first select a location for the swing gates and carry out some preparatory work:

    • clear the area;
    • remove trash;
    • if necessary, level the surface.

    You will also need an accurate design drawing.

    An accurate drawing of swing gates will help you calculate the required amount of material

    What you will need for work: materials and tools

    To build the frame of a double-leaf swing gate you will need:

    • metal profile with a cross section of 8x10 or 10x10 cm with a wall thickness of about 0.7 cm;
    • profile pipe 6x3x0.2 cm;
    • channel beam with walls 14–16 cm thick.

    Corrugated sheets - light metal sheets coated with special compounds that can significantly extend the service life of the material and do not require additional processing or painting - are most often used to cover the frame of swing gate structures. There are several brands:

    • C is a durable and lightweight sheet, which is made of galvanized steel and has a low rib height;
    • NS - has a greater corrugation height and sheet height;
    • H - a heavy sheet that has a high level of strength and reliability, is used for cladding large structures.

    Usually people buy profiled sheets of the C8 or C10 brand, since they are considered the lightest and most durable. The number here indicates the depth of the wave. Craftsmen recommend using a sheet with a thickness of 0.4 mm: this way the gate will weigh approximately 50 kilograms, and installation will not require large lifting devices and mechanisms.

    The optimal type of profiled sheets for cladding swing gates is material grade C8 or C10

    The work also requires roofing felt or other waterproofing material, concrete mortar and metal corners.

    Material calculation

    To determine the total length of the frame, perform the following steps:

    • multiply the width of one sash by 4;
    • multiply the height of the frame by 6;
    • find the sum of the obtained numbers.

    We calculate the amount of metal profile as follows:

    • find the area of one sash (multiply its width by height);
    • multiply the resulting value by 2.

    If you choose the standard width and height of the sash (2 m), then you will need 8 m 2: two sheets of 4 m 2 each to install two leaves.

    The height of the support pillars should correspond to the height of the corrugated sheet, taking into account burial in the ground, and this is another plus of 50–70 centimeters.

    Tools

    To build swing gates you will need:

    • drill, bayonet and shovel;
    • drill;
    • electric screwdriver;
    • metal scissors;
    • square and level.

    Step-by-step instructions for the manufacture and installation of gates

    After clearing the space for installing the structure and preparing materials and tools, the main work can begin.

    1. Mark the place for burying the support pillars, and then use a drill to make holes for their installation with a depth of approximately 1.2 m and a diameter of 0.5 m. If you don’t have a drill, you can use a shovel. The pillars must stand very firmly, since the reliability of future gates depends on this.
    2. Clean the pipes, removing rust from them, treat them with an anti-corrosion agent and wrap the lower edge with roofing material. This is necessary to protect parts from corrosion.
    3. Place a layer of crushed stone about 15 cm thick at the bottom of each hole, install pipes and fill with concrete. Close the upper parts of each rack with special plugs to prevent water from getting inside.
    4. Check the verticality of the supports using a level. To prevent the pillars from sagging, they can be supported with special beams. Wait until the concrete dries (3–5 days).
    5. Assemble the frame on a special flat area.
    6. Weld it and further strengthen it with steel corners.
    7. Visually divide the long sides of the frame into 3 parts and weld jumpers - stiffening ribs - to conventional points. You can also weld the strips diagonally.
    8. Weld the hinges to the places where the jumpers are attached.
    9. Cover the frame with corrugated sheets, having previously cut out rectangular recesses for the hinges with a metal knife.

      Recesses for loops on the corrugated sheet are cut with a metal knife

    10. For fastening, use hex head screws, matched to the color of the base material.

      Hex head screws are used to fasten the corrugated sheets.

    11. It is better to weld the hinges when the frame is still on the site. To prevent the gate from being removed, weld additional mounting angles above the top.
    12. Hang the gate on its hinges and place a wooden stand under the middle of the structure.

    Electric drive for swing gates

    You can also make this part yourself if you are knowledgeable about electricity. Its main part is a mechanism from a parabolic antenna with a worm gear. Old-style satellite TV has a rotating mechanism that can be installed on swing gates. The worm gear operates like a rotary mechanism, but can be operated on a low voltage of 36 volts. Factory drives only operate on 220 volt power.

    For assembly you will need:

    The device can be assembled in one day.

    Installation of factory electric drive

    If you prefer a more reliable system, it is better to use automatic factory units. But first you need to decide where the doors will open - inward or outward.

    Drive Installation Tools:

    • electric drill;
    • pliers;
    • screwdriver;
    • roulette;
    • insulating tape;
    • hammer.

    To select the type of device, you will need to measure the distance between the hinges and the inside of the support:

    Next, we determine the width of the sash and also take into account the required wind load. The gate leaves must move easily so that the electric drive can open and close them smoothly. If the structure opens inward, any electric drives can be installed. For steel pillars it is best to take a linear or lever model, and for brick pillars - only the second. If the gate leaves open outward, then any system that is mounted inside the opening will do. It will take up about 15 centimeters of space on each side of the structure.

    Operating procedure:

    1. Weld metal reinforcements around the column when installing the electric drive on a brick pillar.
    2. Set the hydraulic drive to manual mode and connect the fastening elements to the gate by welding.
    3. If a linear model is selected, then after welding, leave at least 1 cm after the gate is fully opened for smooth and free movement. Check the movement of the valves and the clarity of the movement of the electric drive, and then install the stops and motors.
    4. Install the strips, attach the remote controls and turn on the system. Then equip the automation with switches.
    5. Install a warning light and a photographic device that cannot be equipped until all other systems have been adjusted.

    After welding, all seams must be sanded well to remove scale and excess metal. It is better to treat the pillars and frame with a special anti-corrosion agent and paint them.

    Bolts for swing gates

    If you plan to install automatic gates, then complex locks and deadbolts will not be needed. But if you wish, you can install them. Vertical models are one of the most common, as they are easy to make with your own hands from ordinary fittings:

    An overhead horizontal bolt is usually installed on swing gates made of corrugated sheets on the transverse strips of the frame.

    Video: how to make an electric gate

    You can build electric swing gates yourself. By following the instructions for mounting and covering the frame, installing an automatic system, the home owner will be able to install a reliable and durable structure on his site.

    Acquaintance with the house begins from the gate. Essentially, this is the owners’ business card. Therefore, their appearance should, by definition, be solid and beautiful. But, at the same time, their main purpose is to ensure the safety and security of private country houses and dachas.

    How to combine these two purposes together? How to make swing gates for your dacha beautiful, reliable and functional. What types of swing gates are there and which ones are best to choose? How to make and install. There are detailed step-by-step instructions about all this in our article.

    Before we move on to describing the process of installing gates, we will focus on their pros and cons.

    Advantages of swing gates:

    • simple design;
    • relatively low price;
    • undemanding in maintenance;
    • long service life;
    • strength;
    • ease of operation;
    • unlimited choice of design solutions and shapes;
    • no need for concreting the site. For example, under the rollers for;
    • possibility to install automation.

    Flaws:

    • the need to provide quite a lot of space for opening and closing;
    • the need to take into account the wind load in the region.

    Simple arithmetic shows that swing gates have significantly more advantages. And the shortcomings are removable or not critical. The long history of their existence only confirms the reliability of the system.

    Swing gate design

    No matter what materials appear, no matter how the fashion for decorating gates changes, the basic principle of their arrangement remains unchanged. Structural device:

    • pillars (racks). In fact, they are not gates, but they are supports for their fastening;
    • frame for swing gates. Wood or metal can be used in its manufacture. The latter is more popular because gives the frame greater rigidity;
    • finishing (cladding) material for cladding;
    • loops;
    • latches and locks.

    So, we have decided what swing gates are and what features they differ from.

    Making swing gates - tools and materials

    Having made sure that we can make them ourselves, we will begin construction.

    The required tool for making swing gates and consumables for it.

    Tool

    Mandatory for the manufacture of the frame and arrangement of racks:

    • Bulgarian. Designed for cutting and grinding metal workpieces;
    • threaded discs;
    • grinding discs;
    • welding machine;
    • electrodes;
    • roulette;
    • building level;
    • corner;
    • hammer;
    • shovel;
    • Master OK.

    Auxiliary:

    • compressor, spray gun or brushes for painting racks and/or gates;
    • drill. If necessary for fastening the gate trim;
    • rivet, as well as rivets for it.

    Material

    • pipe for making a frame. It is preferable to use a profile pipe 60x40x1.5. 40x20x1.5 will also do. The final choice depends on the finishing material and taking into account the wind load;
    • pipe for making racks. Here you should also be guided by the weight of the finished gate.
    1. gate weight is within 150 kg. and below. A pipe 80x80x4 is suitable;
    2. gate weight from 150 kg to 300 kg. Pipe - 10x100x5;
    3. The weight of the gate exceeds 300 kg. Pipe -140x104x5.

    Tip: You can use brick, concrete or even wood for the racks. In any case, correlate the properties of the material with the expected load.

    • hinges for swing gates. They can be adjustable or unregulated. Must be made of high-quality material and be able to withstand significant loads;
    • locks. Can be mechanical or electromechanical. The choice is discretionary;
    • dye. Needed for painting racks and/or trim;
    • sheathing There is also complete freedom of choice here. The main thing is that it is to your liking and affordable;
    • automation for swing gates. To be able to make automatic gates. You can not install it at all or install it later. But, if its installation is expected, even in the distant future, it is better to make the frame of the swing gates more durable.

    How to make swing gates with your own hands

    Do not think that homemade is a synonym for the words “ugly” and “unreliable”. Quite the opposite - homemade swing gates mean creativity, individuality and concern for your own safety.

    Sequence of work.

    1. stage - installation of racks for hanging gates.
    2. stage - manufacturing swing gates.

    The stages, of course, can be changed. But the installed racks (posts for swing gates) must last at least a week. In order not to prolong the pleasure, the waiting time can be occupied by welding the gate.

    Stage 1 - installation of swing gate posts

    The following can be used as a stand:

    • profile pipe. The choice of pipe cross-section is justified above in the “materials” section;
    • concrete pillar - purchased or poured on site;
    • brick or natural stone. The latter is used more for cladding due to its non-standard dimensions;
    • wooden beam (100x100).

    Methods for installing poles/racks:

    The pipe can be driven to a depth of about one and a half meters

    This installation method is the fastest, most cost-effective (no concrete costs), and it is possible to replace the stand. The main thing when constructing pillars using this method is to maintain the level. This will prevent the gate from skewing.

    Material prepared for the website www.site

    Strengthen the support pillar with concrete (concrete), i.e. make, a kind of foundation for the base of the gate.

    We will describe the second one, because the first requires brute force and suitable soil.

    Installation of gate posts

    Execution sequence:

    1. Dig or drill with an earth drill a pit at least 1 meter deep. The diameter of the drill must be at least 200 mm, with a pipe cross-section of 100x100.
      The depth depends on the depth of soil freezing in the installation region. The width of the sides is determined by the quality of the soil and the dimensions of the supports (pipe, wood, concrete).
    2. We arrange a sand and crushed stone cushion under the concrete. Its height is 150-200 mm. The purpose is to prevent the post from deepening and to create a foundation for concreting.
    3. We install the post and level it using a building level.
    4. Prepare the concrete and pour the stand.

    Concrete pillars must withstand for 7 days, no less. The concrete must harden well. While the concrete is curing, periodically moisten it with water. Of course, cracks in such a small area are not as dangerous as, for example, cracks in the foundation of a house. But it's better to avoid them.

    Tip: If you use brick or concrete rather than a pipe, the depth of the recess will also be 1 m.

    For reliability, the racks need to be reinforced. And also, take out two or three reinforcing embeds in advance for attaching the hinges.

    Stage 2 - production of swing gates

    Sequence of independent device.

    Installation location and appearance of swing gates

    This is the starting point from which all work begins. Often the installation location has a direct impact on the appearance of the structure.

    For example, you need to install a gate in the backyard, at the entrance to the garden, or to fence off a future construction site. Then both the material and the design will be as simplified as possible.

    If it is a front gate or a garage, then the costs will be higher.

    Swing gate sizes

    Ideally, the gate is made together with the fence. However, if, for example, you have a hedge or you are expanding the driveway and need a new gate, you should accurately measure the dimensions.

    Tip: Try to make swing gates in the same style as the fence.

    It is important to measure the height and width of the opening for the gate. When measuring the height, keep in mind that a technical gap is usually left at the bottom of the gate. Its value depends on the coverage of access roads. If you have asphalt, tiles or concrete in the gate area, then 5-7 cm of clearance is enough. If the soil is not strengthened (grass grows) and the surface is not flat - then about 10 cm. Technical clearance is also needed to reduce the wind load, if the future gate is solid, without ventilation gaps.

    It is also necessary to ensure that there is sufficient clearance between the sashes. This will level out slight displacement of the racks.

    Drawing of swing gates

    Having at your disposal a drawing and design diagram of swing gates, it is easy to calculate the amount of material required.

    Try to make a frame for the gate so that its dimensions correspond to the dimensions of the intended finishing material. This will make the installation process easier for you and avoid connecting seams on the front surface of the gate. For example, the standard width of PS-10 corrugated sheet is 1,100 mm.

    Advice. When making calculations, use the working, and not the total, width of the finishing material.

    The figure shows a diagram of a frame for swing gates, which we will take as a basis.

    Using this drawing as a basis, you can calculate the amount of material, attachment points and parameters of pipes and finishing materials.

    In our example, the frame is a welded structure. It will be made of pipe or metal profile. But you can also use wood. If, for example, you have a completely wooden gate.

    The picture shows that the frame has a square appearance and internal jumpers. They are needed to give the frame rigidity.

    Please note that this diagram is shown for swing gates that are not equipped with a wicket. The gate is located separately. If you decide to save space and embed the gate into the gate, consider this need when creating a drawing of the frame for swing gates.

    Calculation of swing gates

    For the frame shown in the diagram you will need the following material:

    • profile pipe 60x40 - 22 meters - for the perimeter of the frame and lintels. This pipe will be attached to the racks and support the entire structure;
    • profile pipe 40x20 - 15 meters - for the internal frame (perimeter reinforcement). Namely, the gate lining material will be attached to this pipe.

    Usually pipes are sold by linear meters, so it is better to immediately take the sizes that you need. Among other things, this will make delivery easier for you.

    Pipe cutting and grinding

    At this stage, the manufacturing of frame components occurs. The pipes are cut to the required length and polished.

    Grinding is needed to remove rust from pipes. If the metal is lubricated with oil, it must be removed using a solvent (usually gasoline).

    Welding swing gates

    When carrying out welding work, remember safety precautions. It is better when this type of work is performed by a specialist. This way the quality of welded joints will be higher. And the appearance is more beautiful.

    When welding, it is important to make joints in such a way as to protect the pipe from water leakage. Otherwise, water or snow will get into it. In winter it will freeze, and with warming it will begin to expand. This will inevitably lead to expansion of the pipe walls. And, as a result, to deformation of the entire structure.

    In our example, the internal pipes are welded in the form of squares. But this is not of fundamental importance.

    The pitch of welding fastening of the external and internal frame (pipes 60x40 and pipes 40x20) is 250-300 mm. Maintain staggered order. This way, the pipes will not break the weld seam due to thermal expansion.

    Some drawings of frames for swing gates are given below.

    The more stiffening ribs, the greater the wind load your gate can withstand.

    If you are sewing up a fence with finishing material, then weld the pipe in the middle of the outer one. This way, it’s easier to mark the place where the casing is attached.

    Primer

    It doesn’t matter what material was used to make the frame - metal or wood - it needs to be primed. A primer will extend the life of the paintwork and make the application process more enjoyable.

    Welding areas are primed especially carefully.

    Latch and hinges for swing gates

    The hinges are welded to the frame and to the racks (pillars). If the stand is made of brick, and the removal of reinforcement was not provided, then you must first attach the channel to the brick with a dowel, and then weld the loop.

    Varieties of loops are shown in the photo

    The valve mechanism you choose is the one you prefer. The most common and easiest to manufacture is the one shown in the photo.

    Finishing of swing gates

    • Painting the frame

    The frame must first be wiped clean from dust. Any paint is suitable for painting. It is better to apply the paint with a spray gun, so it will lie smoother and the work will go faster. You can also use a brush. In this case, the process will be somewhat delayed, and the paint consumption will be less.

    It is better to apply paint in several layers.

    • Fastening finishing material

    Covering the gate is possible before and after installing the frame on the posts. To do this, we attach the casing to the inner pipe (40x20, in our example). The method of fastening and fastening depends on the finishing material.

    How to cover swing gates

    The following materials are used:

    Corrugated sheet

    Advantages - low price, wide range of colors, light weight. The disadvantages include: the difficulty of replacement (it is difficult to choose the color, because the sheet fades slightly, plus, the shade depends on the batch and manufacturer). And also, the possibility of damage during installation and high windage.

    Tree

    Advantages - availability, beautiful appearance of natural wood, ease of replacement. Disadvantages: high maintenance requirements. Over time, the wood may dry out, leading to cracks.

    A metal sheet

    The advantage is durability. The disadvantage is significant weight.

    Forging

    Advantages: unlimited designs. The disadvantage is that only specialists can make forged gates with their own hands.

    Steel mesh

    Advantages: low cost, high speed, light weight. Disadvantage - low aesthetic properties; the transparency of the fence makes the entire territory of the yard accessible for viewing.

    Rabitz

    The characteristics are the same. More suitable for installing technical gates.

    Combined

    The basis of this combination is most often forging, which allows you to give the gate any shape. And they are closed by lining the inside with wood, metal, corrugated sheets or polycarbonate. Examples of such gates in the photo

    Installation of swing gates

    So, the racks are ready, the frame is welded, the finishing material is fixed. It's time to hang the gate.

    Conclusion

    We hope you are convinced that installing swing gates with your own hands is not a difficult task. If you have the materials and tools, installing the gate will not take more than a week. From the installation of the pillars to the installation of the gates. And if you consider that it takes 7 days for the concrete pillars to settle, then generally a day. I wish you success!

    Swing gates - photos of different device options

    If you are planning to make a gate with your own hands, you will need step-by-step instructions that will help you calculate all the nuances of the work and will facilitate the process of creating them.

    Before purchasing the necessary materials, decide on the type of gate that is suitable for a particular case and a convenient method for installing it.

    Types of structures

    There are many types of gates, which can be made of different materials and equipped with special mechanisms. A wide selection allows you to create homemade gates based on the characteristics of the room or area, your needs and frequency of use.

    Before making gates, you should study the main types of designs that are popular.

    Sliding

    Sliding canvases are divided into several categories. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the option you need. For each type of structure, you will need to clear a free area along the fence so that the sash can open freely.

    There are cantilever sliding structures, suspended and sliding. The structure of such canvases involves moving along rails and other metal profiles.

    Hanging options are not popular for use on private property, since the entry height is limited by the upper profile to which the canvas is fixed. The valves also move along this profile.

    Some country house owners install fan designs, which received this name due to their appearance.

    Sliding doors, which move on a rail located along the wall, are also not popular in snowy and northern cities.

    In order for the sash of sliding structures to move freely along the rail, it will be necessary to constantly remove ice and other debris, which is not always comfortable in winter.

    Cantilever leaves are considered the most optimal design for sliding gates. The canvas is rigidly attached to the beam, which moves along the cantilever assembly and moves the sashes behind it. Despite the fact that the structure of the products is complex, they work great in the winter season, since the sash does not come into contact with the ground.

    Tilt&Turn

    This design is optimal for garage conditions. They are not suitable for installation in the yard, since the gates limit the entry height. The canvas should function freely by lifting and sliding the sash under the ceiling of the room.

    Swing

    Such structures with a door are often installed on the fence in the private sector. Swing gates are based on pillars, two of which are located at the width of the door leaf, and the third pillar is located next to the gate, if it is located next to the structure.

    Rolled

    These designs have recently appeared on the market. Gates are made of steel strips, which are combined into a flexible sheet. When it is necessary to open the gate, they begin to roll up and wrap around the shaft. This solution allows you to drive close to the room.

    Folding

    Folding gates are known to many as “accordion gates”. The door can be opened upwards and sideways. There are sealing gaskets between the metal mesh. Designs that open upward have become widespread.

    Manufacturing Features

    Each type of gate has its own design features. Before starting the manufacturing process, you should study the structure diagrams of the canvas and work out an action plan. Swing gates are not an exception to this issue. Even a beginner who has not previously worked with metal products can make a swing gate from corrugated sheets with his own hands.

    To make products, you will need skills in working with a drill, welding, screwdriver, construction tape and grinder. The design of the products is created in such a way that the use of free space should be accompanied by maximum functionality. The reliability of the gate is ensured by roller blocks, which are located in the lower part of the profile beam and move due to the opening or closing of the doors.

    There are several features of this type of gate that distinguish it from other designs:

    • when assembling the canvas, push-button corner connectors are used, thanks to which it is possible to prevent the sashes from sagging during use;
    • The material fasteners are hidden, thereby preserving the decorative properties of the gate. Also, this solution prevents foreign objects from entering the space between the profile;
    • The doors are fastened using three-section hinges. Details allow you to extend the service life of the structure.

    Studying the drawings of a standard sheet made of corrugated sheets, you will notice that a frame made of a square metal profile is used as the basis of the structure. As an alternative, a thick-walled pipe with a diameter of 30 mm is used.

    To strengthen the doors, a metal vein is used. It should be positioned horizontally. Such reinforcement allows you to maintain the geometry of the canvas.

    You can secure the doors using electric welding or metal screws. Since the corrugated sheet is lightweight, two strong loops with a diameter of 20 mm will be enough for it. Metal pipes with a diameter of 60-100 mm can act as a load-bearing support.

    The gate leaves are fastened on the basis of the fence that is present on the site. If you are planning to install a brick fence, consider installing embedded joints between the bricks in advance. Hinged supports will be welded to them.

    The optimal width of entrance gates on private property is 3 m. These dimensions are sufficient for a truck or car to enter the yard. The height of the gate should not exceed 2 meters.

    L-shaped pins can be used as a locking mechanism. They should be located at the bottom of the sashes. Special clamps are dug into the ground, which are metal tubes whose diameter exceeds the thickness of the locking mechanism.

    To ensure that the new gate fits harmoniously into the overall interior of the site, you can use corrugated sheets to finish the frame part. As a rule, the material is attached to the frame of the canvas.

    Maintain a distance from the ground, which should be 50-70 mm.

    Material selection

    The type of material from which the gate will be made is influenced by the dimensions of the structure, its weight and other factors. Typically, the frames for the sashes are made from a profile pipe with a cross-section of 60x40 mm. Choose metal whose thickness is 1.5-2 mm.

    The cross-sectional size also depends on the weight of the gate, but experts recommend making a choice based on the following indicators:

    • if the total weight of the gate leaves does not exceed 150 kg, you can use a pipe whose cross-section is 80x80 mm. The metal thickness should be 4 mm;
    • when metal gates weigh from 150-300 kg, it is necessary to use a pipe with a cross-section of 100x100 mm and a thickness of 5 mm;
    • if the weight of the structure exceeds 300 kg, iron pipes with a cross-section of 140x140 mm and a material thickness of 5 mm are suitable for you.

    To create racks, you can use brick, wood or concrete. When choosing a material, you should study the properties and its resistance to expected loads.

    Hinges can have adjustable or non-adjustable mechanisms. Make sure that the material used is of high quality, as the hinges must support the weight of the fabric.

    The lock may have a mechanical structure or operate on the basis of electromechanics. The choice should be made based on your preferences. You will also need paint to paint the racks and metal profile cladding.

    The sheathing can be made of any material. Many people make cladding from profiles; some owners of country houses choose combined options made of wood and metal or PVC. Any option you like will be suitable for this purpose.

    If you are planning to create an automatic gate, make the frame more durable. Automation can be installed immediately or later.

    Dimensions

    The best option is to build a gate at the same time as a fence. However, many people are faced with a situation where they need to widen their driveway or replace an old product. In this case, you will need to make an accurate calculation of the future gate.

    Taking measurements and calculating the required amount of material, take into account the surface of the driveways. If your area is equipped with an asphalt, concrete or tiled surface, you can leave a clearance of 5 cm. If there is grass on the road, increase the clearance to 10 cm for comfortable opening of the gate.

    Do not forget to leave a gap between the sashes so that in the future it will be possible to level out the displacement of the supports.

    Tools and accessories

    Gates can have a variety of structures. Many people equip their canvases with built-in gates for convenience. Before creating a gate, you will need to carefully consider how the finished canvas will look, draw a diagram or sketch of the structure. This decision will help you decide on the tools and materials that will be required to create the canvas.

    The standard list of components for creating gates consists of the following items:

    • sheathing for sashes, support pipes;
    • reinforcement for creating stiffeners;
    • a pipe made of a profile or a square of metal for the frame of the structure;
    • primer, material for painting;
    • bolts, latches or bolt mechanisms;
    • hinges for sashes, guides and closers if necessary.

    You will also need the following tools:

    • construction cord made of nylon;
    • welding machine;
    • hammer;
    • screwdriver or drill;
    • electric grinder;
    • special scissors for metal.

    When planning a new gate, you will need to pay special attention to the dimensions of the structure and the presence of a gate. Due to the large sashes, the weight of the entire structure increases, so the frame should be made of reinforced material.

    How to do it yourself?

    Gates are manufactured in stages. The process is divided into two steps:

    • installation of racks for hanging the canvas;
    • creation of swing gates.

    You can replace the stages, but the posts for the gate structure must stand for at least seven days, after which you can hang the frame on them. In order not to waste time, you can start welding.

    Installation of supports

    Supports can be made from:

    • profile pipe;
    • concrete pillars. You can buy a finished product or fill it yourself;
    • brick or natural stone.
    • wooden beam.

    Installation of supports can be carried out using the following methods:

    • driving. The driving depth should be about 1.5 meters. This method is considered the fastest and most economical. When choosing this method, you should carefully monitor the level so that the gate does not warp;
    • concreting with reinforcement. You will need to strengthen the pillar with concrete.

    Step-by-step instructions for installing supports:

    • if you decide to do concreting, you will need to drill a pit with a minimum depth of 1 meter. Drilling must be done with a drill whose diameter is more than 200 mm.
    • The depth of the pit will depend on the degree of soil freezing in your region. The width of the sides can be determined using the quality of the soil and the size of the support itself.
    • create a concrete cushion 150-200 mm high. It should consist of sand and crushed stone. The cushion is used to prevent deepening of the racks;
    • then you will need to mount the post and level it using a building level. After leveling the support, you can begin pouring;
    • The concreted structure must last for a week. This is the minimum period required for concrete to harden. Do not forget to periodically moisten the concrete with water to prevent cracks from appearing;
    • to increase the reliability of the supports, it will be necessary to make reinforcement and install a pair of reinforcing embeds under the hinges.

    Creating sashes

    Before you begin construction of the structure, you should decide on the location and appearance of the gate. The place where the products are installed can influence the appearance of all elements.

    If you are planning to install a gate in your backyard, at the entrance to a garden area, or to create a fence for a future construction site, you will need to choose simple materials. For the front gate you should choose more expensive and presentable products.

    A universal guide for making gates with your own hands:

    • prepare a drawing of the future structure. Using the diagram, you can make an accurate calculation of the required materials;
    • The gate frame must correspond to the finishing dimensions. By observing this condition, you can simplify the entire work process and will not encounter connecting seams on the front part of the canvas;
    • when making calculations, you should use the indicators of the working width of finishing materials;
    • to create components for the frame, you will need to cut the pipe to the required length and sand it;
    • Grinding is required to clean products from rust. If there is oil grease on the metal, it can be removed using solvents.

    Welding

    When interacting with welding, do not forget about safety precautions. If you do not have enough experience, contact specialists. Using this method, you can improve the quality of work and get an attractive design.

    Joints should be made in such a way that water does not flow into the pipe.. If the joints are welded incorrectly, snow or water will get into the pipe, which will begin to increase in volume in warm weather. This will lead to expansion of the walls of the product and deformation of the entire structure.

    If you are welding the outer and inner frames, a staggered order will be required. In this way, it is possible to prevent ruptures of welding seams due to thermal expansion.

    Stiffening ribs influence resistance to wind loads. If you are sewing a fence using finishing material, weld the pipe in the middle part of the outer seam. In this way you will mark the place where the sheathing material will be attached.

    Welding of the loop should be done to the posts and to the frame. If you used bricks to make the pillars, but no reinforcement was removed, you will need to attach a channel to the brick, and then start welding the hinges.

    Primer

    No matter what material you use to create the frame, it will require priming. The primer extends the life of the paint and makes the application process more comfortable. Welding areas should be primed more thoroughly.

    Painting the frame

    Before painting, remove all dust from the frame. To paint the part, you can use any type of paint. Most people use a spray gun as it ensures a more even coat application. Using a brush delays the process, but reduces paint consumption.

    With this step-by-step guide, you can make your own gate and simplify the process as much as possible.

    Beautiful examples and options

    A beautifully decorated gate will attract attention to the site and demonstrate the good taste of its owner. Openwork canvases are popular. Decorative doors look expensive and sophisticated. The inner side of the structure can be sheathed with polycarbonate sheets. Externally, such gates look like a real work of art.

    The products can be installed in a country house or on a country plot. With patterned elements you can show the individuality of your territory.

    Stained glass inserts on the entrance gates give the entire area an impressive and unusual look. The designs demonstrate their brightness and originality, attracting the attention of others. You can choose any design depending on your imagination. The style of the idea must be combined with the rest of the design components.

    If you want to give your site a more austere look, pay attention to solid metal gates with forged elements. They will harmoniously combine metal with decorative patterns. The chosen design will show the good taste of its owner and will hide the area from prying eyes.

    On the site that borders the plantings, you can install gates made of natural materials. You can use a stone for support. Such canvases look beautiful against the backdrop of nature. Natural components will last a long time if you treat the surface with protective products.

    The strength of the gate is guaranteed by stone supports. This design is convenient, since when replacing the main leaf there is no need to dismantle the entire gate.

    Compact white gates always attract attention. The white color scheme gives the products lightness and weightlessness. Although the gates have a catchy color, they will blend organically with the overall style of the area.

    The design will attract the attention of passers-by, since there is an opinion that only wealthy people can afford such gates.

    Sliding products with an original design will look good in the country. They can save space on your site and will delight you with their modern style.

    Many people equip gates with wooden gates, which can be used not only as an entrance to the territory, but also for zoning space.

    In this article we will try to tell you how to make swing gates with your own hands. You will understand that there is nothing complicated about this. When producing a sash, the most difficult thing is to weld the frame. If you do not know how to use welding, then hire a welder for a couple of hours.

    How to make a gate with your own hands - choosing materials

    Gates can be made of wood or metal. Please note that you are unlikely to be able to make decorative gates yourself with curved lines using forging; only a professional can do this. To make decorative gates you need equipment, a special room, expensive tools and, of course, experience. It is better to buy such gates ready-made. It would be wiser for a home craftsman to make a regular gate with a metal frame covered with profiled sheets.

    How to make a gate with your own hands - installation of supports

    If the yard is already fenced with a fence with support posts and a gate, then this greatly simplifies the matter. Secure the hinges by welding directly on them. If there are no supports, then you need to perform a number of simple steps.

    • Treat the metal supports with primer and paint them.
    • Depending on the width of the gate, you need to dig 2 holes 1.5 meters deep.
    • Place a cushion of sand and gravel at the bottom of the pit.
    • Insert the supports into the holes and secure them with reinforcement.
    • Align the supports plumb and fill with concrete.

    Hinges can only be installed after the concrete has completely hardened.

    How to make a gate with your own hands - gate frame

    To make the frame correctly, you need to prepare a drawing of the metal structure in advance and at this stage adhere to a certain sequence of actions.

    • In accordance with the required dimensions indicated in the drawing, cut the metal pipe strictly at an angle of 45 degrees.
    • The frame must be assembled on a flat horizontal surface and immediately secured by welding.
    • Check the internal dimensions and compare the diagonals of the resulting frame.
    • Make the necessary adjustments and weld the frame completely.
    • In the sash where a gate is not provided, weld several corners from the inside for reinforcement.
    • In the second leaf, assemble a special opening in which the gate door will be fixed.
    • Once you have finished preparing the door opening, assemble the door. Using the prepared dimensions, assemble the frame of the gate in a strictly rectangular shape.
    • The rigidity of the gate door should be at the same level as the ribs on the leaf.
    • To give the structure additional rigidity, weld metal triangles in the corners.
    • Weld 2 cross members to the frame.
    • According to the drawing, weld the canopies and bolts in the required places.
    • After welding, the elements are ground and primed.
    • Paint the structure.

    How to make a gate with your own hands - covering the frame with corrugated sheets

    After the frame has dried, you can use corrugated sheeting to cover the frame. Place the profiled sheet on the frame and carefully attach it using rivets or self-tapping screws. The use of rivets allows you to achieve an attractive appearance.

    Rivets and self-tapping screws must be secured in the recesses of the corrugated sheet. Consumption: for 1 square meter of corrugated sheeting you need to use at least 6 rivets or self-tapping screws. This quantity is due to the fact that in addition to the weight of the gate, they must withstand strong wind loads. After fixing the sheets of corrugated sheets, you can begin hanging the gate on the hinges.

    How to make a gate with your own hands - installation nuances

    Before installing swing gates, you need to make sure that the ground surface is even. Since most craftsmen make gates that can open in both directions, keep in mind that gates that open “pull” open more conveniently and last longer. Such gates are difficult to break open from the street side, since more force must be applied against the direction of opening than in the direction “along” the gate. This is important, because in critical situations every minute is valuable.

    Making your own gates from corrugated sheets is a reliable and economical way to protect your property from prying eyes and uninvited guests. This entire system can be automated, which will improve the practicality and functionality of using the gate. Automated equipment is used for this.

    It is believed that swing gates are the oldest type of gate. Their existence is measured in millennia, but the principle of the device remains constant, and changes concern only the materials of manufacture and design.

    They are used almost everywhere: in enterprises, cottages, and private homes. The availability of materials necessary for their manufacture, reliability and simplicity of design explain such a wide distribution of gates of this type. Gates can also become a decoration for your property if you manage to make their lining beautiful. The lining can be made from corrugated sheets, metal sheets, forging, etc.

    The advantages of swing gates include:

    • simplicity of design
    • low manufacturing cost
    • versatility
    • long service life
    • almost complete absence of maintenance required.

    However, these gates also have disadvantages:

    • In winter, snow removal is required to open them
    • Gate leaves require significant free space so that they open freely

    Let's start manufacturing - stages of work

    The first thing you need to take care of is load-bearing pillars. They need to be manufactured and then installed. For swing gates, pillars made of a profile metal pipe with a diameter of at least 100 mm, wooden beams made of hardwood, or concrete can be used. When installing such pillars, they must be concreted to a depth of 1 m or more.

    If the pillars are built of bricks, then their foundation must be concreted to the same depth. The pillars themselves and their base must be reinforced. From the pillars inside the opening, a corner must be released or installed, which will be necessary for attaching the gate posts.

    Concrete for concreting pillars is made from a mixture of cement, crushed stone and river sand in a ratio of 1:4. To make it easier to work, it is best to use fine crushed stone.

    After pouring the load-bearing pillar, let it sit for 7 days or more so that the concrete sets well.

    While waiting for the concrete to harden, you can do manufacturing of gate leaves. First of all, you should prepare the pipes for making the frame. They must be cleaned of corrosion and dirt, degreased with solvent or gasoline and a layer of anti-corrosion primer applied. When the pipes are ready, the frame must be welded in the form of a rectangle or square. To ensure double-sided lining, an additional pipe is welded flush with the main one in the middle part of the frame. After sanding the weld seams, the gate frame must be primed and painted.

    After the paint has dried, you should begin sewing up the door leaf. The choice of lining material and the order of lining is a very individual matter and depends mainly on the taste of the owner.

    The next stage is suspension gate If the supporting pillars are metal, then the gate hinges are welded to the pillar itself. If the pillars are stone or brick, then a metal stand must be attached to them using dowels. And the hinges are already attached to this rack.

    If you make swing gates with your own hands, they will cost you much less. If you know how to do basic plumbing and if all the necessary materials are on hand, then making swing gates will take two or three days.
