Instructions

Naturally, the image of the devil in the minds of people changed from era to era.
Satan, Beelzebub, Lucifer, unclean, devil, world evil ... The Bible simply calls him the Beast, emphasizing the anti-human essence. In the Middle Ages, horns, hooves and a tail, a disgusting appearance were indispensable attributes of the most ancient images of the devil that have come down to us.

Maybe there was a certain visual incident: the medieval devil inherited the horns, hooves and tail from the ancient Greek satyrs, who were also depicted with horns, hooves and a tail. The difference is that you can’t even call satyrs the masters of evil: the Greeks portrayed them as harmless idlers, drunks, who only did what they played the pipes around the clock and looked after the nymphs on the Olympic lawns ...

The natural and great era of renaissance lifted art to a height unprecedented in the history of mankind. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buanarotti also thought about. And both found their own way to get around the church prohibition and convey to their descendants their vision of the appearance of the devil. The great Florentine encrypted the image of the devil in a group where the central characters were with a baby. You cannot see him, but the devil is here, he is always here! - as if speaking Leonardo. You need a mirror to see the devil. Bring the mirror to the figure of the Madonna - and the devil will look at you.

Renaissance ... The great sculptor Michelangelo created an ingenious statue around which art critics are breaking spears to this day. We are talking about the figure of Moses - that is, as it were, Moses, who in fact is not Moses at all. The universal power, cruelty and malice that this figure breathes do not in any way fit with the image of the biblical hero who saved an entire nation from death. And most importantly: small neat horns on the character's head. The last attribute, undoubtedly showing that it is not Moses that is depicted: the devil is depicted as Mikalangelo saw him. Moses suffered innocently? - Sure. It's just that the great sculptor did not find another way to get around the prohibition of the clergy.

Tsaredvorsky, idolatrous nineteenth century. The age of bourgeois revolutions - which means resistance to one-man management. The genius of Russian literature, Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov, in a whole series of works turned the people's idea of the devil upside down. "Sad demon, spirit of exile" did not evoke fear or hatred, it evoked sympathy. Lermontov made me remember that the same Bible asserted that the devil is, albeit a fallen one. This is the beloved son of God, although exiled. It is a rebellious and suffering spirit. Spirit of world sorrow. It is this image of the beautiful rebellious and suffering devil - the Demon - that another genius of Russian art, the great artist Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel, embodied in his paintings based on the works of Lermontov.

And the twentieth century is the century of rethinking values. Mikhail Afanasevich Bulgakov creates the epochal novel The Master and Margarita, in which the devil again changes his appearance and meaning. Woland from "The Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov is the highest intellect, omnipotent power, noble appearance and ... evil in the name of good. Woland punishes evil with evil, violence - violence, literally burning out human abomination. Woland puts God and light above all else. By his devilish means - cruelty and violence - he constantly and invariably fights for the cause of light. He is ironic, witty, and looks like a wealthy gentleman. No horns or hooves.

People are imperfect, but it is not proper for God the Creator to commit violence against his children. And if they deserve it? If they commit outrages on earth against their own brothers and sisters? If they do lawlessness, violate God's and human laws, the laws of humanity and philanthropy? “They deserve the most brutal retribution. And Woland administers justice. He is, rather, the chief of the secret police of heaven, and not an evil devil.

Coincidentally, today is Catholic ... you know what. And this is mine 666 fast. So, as they say, the boch himself ordered to write something about the Horned Prince ... :-) At first I wanted to post one article, but it’s some kind of not very satanic (will be later), then I thought to just put various pictures of the Devil and Satan and came across this great post.

The devil and devils lay in wait for a person at every step, and many artists of those times could not ignore this topic. The priests especially got it, there are many images and caricatures of them (apparently, there were reasons :).

St Antony standing on the demon with a staff in both hands
Van Meckenem engraved St Antony and St Quirinus on the one plate, but the only known examples are from the plate cut vertically in two halves.

Quirinus is the patron saint of Neuss near Düsseldorf and Antony was a popular saint who in the same region was called upon in times of need. In 1474/5, Neuss was attacked by troops of Charles the Bold. This print might well have been produced in response to that event, to invoke the protection of these saints.

12.2 Satan in the Visual Arts: Terrible and Charming

All images of Satan correspond to new biographytreating the Devil as a disgraced, punished angel - a scenario that has become firmly established after the 4th century. In this context, it was only natural to portray the Devil as an inferior angel - so if the angels had wings, then the Devil had them.

An example of this is the illustrations for the first two episodes in the Old Testament, which we looked at at the beginning of our story - namely, the story of Balaam and his donkey and the test of Job. In the first episode, the "satanic character" of the Angel of Yahweh, who, according to the Hebrew text, "comes like Satan" before Balaam, is "lost in translation": the Latin Vulgate simply says: "... the Angel of the Lord stood on the road to hinder him [Balaam ] ”, Telling him:“ I went out to hinder [you] ”(LVB Num. 22:22, 32). The version of King James: "The Angel of the Lord stood in his way, like an enemy (enemy)", "I went out to confront [you]" [ Hebrew.: “To be your adversary”] (KJV Num. 22:22, 32 and notes).

The illustrations for this scene always show the angel in all his heavenly glory (see Figure 1).

The illustrations to the book of Job, on the other hand, deprive Satan of all his heavenly regalia, even though the text suggests that Satan is “one of God's entourage”: “And there was a day when the Sons of God came to appear before the Lord; among them Satan also came [ ancient hebrew... "Adversary"] "(KJV Job 1: 6 and notes). We see, for example, in William Blake's famous illustration that Satan is depicted as a muscular man with dark skin (see ill. 2a); in another version (see ill. 2b) it is somewhat lighter, but it has large wings, similar to the wings of a bat. We see a similar contrast in Gustave Dore's illustrations for the scene with Balaam and the temptation of Jesus (see Figures 3 and 4).

The only concrete description of the appearance of the Devil in the Bible is presented in the “imaginary” vision of John the Theologian in Revelation (12: 3): there he is a giant red serpent (dragon). This may mean that all of it consists only of a head and a tail - remember that in those days dragons were considered legless (see 6.2). But according to John's highly symbolic vision, here the Devil has seven heads and ten horns in some way distributed between these heads.

The early illustrators of Revelation strove to follow exactly what was indicated. Albrecht Durer's illustrations for the 1498 edition of Revelation are a later example of literal adherence to biblical texts (see Figure 5). However, the Apocalypse from Saint Sever (mid-11th century) contains another depiction of Satan based on another chapter of Revelation, namely the 9th, which speaks of locusts. According to the biblical text, the king of the locust is Avadon (see 6.2), but here he is clearly marked with letters SATANwritten on his shoulders. He looks like a tall man with dark wings, driving off locusts with a long staff (see ill. 6).

The devil was also associated with Leviathan, a huge sea monster that most likely had only one head. Hell was depicted as a similar monster, but located in the ground, so that only the head and a huge open mouth were visible on the surface.

The idea of Satan, chained in hell and feeding on the souls of the damned, is traced in Italian frescoes, possibly inspiring Dante to describe him. This idea was based in part on earlier "literary journeys" to the underworld. But many motives were probably borrowed from the artistic images of the last pages of the Apocalypse: The Devil, cast into the lake of fire, like the Beast, the False Prophet; Death, Hades and all who were not recorded in the Book of Life (Rev. 20: 10-15).

When the Edenic Serpent began to be associated or even identified with Satan, another version of its image in the form of a reptile appeared, namely a snake with legs or, at least, capable of moving vertically; earlier the Serpent was depicted in the form of a common snake, which can only crawl on the ground or twine around the trunks and branches of trees. The biblical curse of the Serpent is clearly visible in the strange artistic evolution described above, which gave all snakes, including dragons, a pair or two pairs of legs (not to mention a dog's head, as well as bird wings and feathers). The tradition relating specifically to the Edenic Serpent was to depict him with human features, usually with a woman's head and often with a woman's torso and chest (for example, see Fig. 9).

In the "Lives of the Saints," as the chapters of the "Golden Legend" show, this biblical information was further developed. The devil and his demons can appear in any form they want - as frightening monsters (usually reptiles) or as ordinary people (including beautiful and seductive women). But when demons appear in their own form, they are usually characterized as "Ethiopians," meaning black Africans. In the legend of St. In Matthew, we noted one particularly grotesque description of a demon who dwelt in an idol, and in the legend of the Finding of the Cross, a description of Satan, where he looks like a huge Ethiopian (see 6.2). There is a noticeable tendency to depict demons (especially the lower ones - tempting and punishing) as black and hairy humanoid creatures, often with clawed bird legs, with additional faces on the chest, stomach, genitals, buttocks, knees and / or with a tail.

As an example of the variety of images of devilish forces in the Middle Ages, consider the famous "Magnificent Book of Hours," a remarkable manuscript originally created by the Limburg brothers in 1415 and completed in 1485 by Jean Colombes.

There is a splendid illustration of the fall of the angels, still with their golden wings and dressed in sky blue. All of them, together with the first falling Lucifer, have crowns on their heads. The good angels diligently push the fallen, henceforth evil angels (see ill. 7).

We see Satan, still wearing a crown, but already without wings, with huge horns and large ears, naked, with hairy hips and large testicles, lying on a hot grate heated by bellows that other demons inflate. Satan swallows damned souls and then spits them out in fiery streams. He seems to be having a good time and his fever misery is subtle. He is not tied to the bars, and we get the impression that he can interrupt this amusement at any time and go on other afterlife business or create disasters on earth - at any time he wants (see Fig. 8).

The scene in the Garden of Eden shows the Serpent coiled around a tree; it has a female torso and head (remarkably similar to Eve's torso and head) and a snake body with a pair of "crocodile legs" (see Figure 9). Michael's battle with Satan the Dragon is depicted as a single combat; the dragon is not red, but golden in color, very modest in size (compared to Michael) and with a single head. The battle takes place over Mount Saint-Michel, located in northern France (see ill. 10). Elsewhere in the book, a small scene of the Last Judgment is depicted, where the damned fall into the open mouth of hell (see ill. 11). However, when Jean Colombes depicts the gates of hell, he only shows a fiery landscape (see ill. 12). In this illustration (see ill. 13), there are no demons, but only souls punished in purgatory and freed from there. Finally, I must mention the full-page miniature of Colombes depicting the dead coming to the rescue (see ill. 14); it was often mistaken for the depiction of the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse - Death (see 2.3, 6.2 and 10.3). But rather, it is an illustration of the famous story of the Grateful Dead (yes, the very story that gave the name to the famous rock band). A version of this story is detailed in The Golden Legend ( GL 163). A man who prayed for the dead every time he walked through the cemetery was once persecuted by his enemies - and suddenly all the dead rose from their graves (while each was armed with his lifetime tools) and stood up as a strong and terrifying army against the persecutors.

Far from being demons of Hell or servants of the Devil, these skeletal figures represent the souls of the dead, enduring atoning cleansing. Such cleansing, as Yakov Voraginsky tells us in the corresponding chapter of the "Golden Legend", is performed in a certain place, that is, in purgatory, or in specially designated places on earth.

The fallen angels are in charge of punishments in purgatory, but, notes Jacob, sometimes these suffering souls are visited by good angels and strengthen them in humbly and patiently enduring suffering.

The image of the Devil in the form of a goat "comes into fashion" as a visual illustration of exactly how sorcerers worship Satan - Malefici and Maleficae.

The "goat" appearance of the Devil, often combined with a human face and torso, was strongly influenced by the classic image of a satyr - a half-goat, half-human. The Devil also began to look like an incubus, that is, a demon raping women. The Church Fathers, including St. Augustine, believed that demons are able to have sexual intercourse with people (see: Augustine... About the City of God, 15.23; NPNF1, vol. 2), which, of course, looked like some mockery of the older interpretation of the text of Genesis (6: 1-4), where angels (“sons of God”) gave birth to titans from earthly women (see 2.1, 2.2, 5.4, 8.1).

However, for some time now it has become a common belief that fallen angels, like good angels, are "purely spiritual," so that such connections are impossible. But, as St. Thomas, a demon can make a woman pregnant using "artificial insemination." To do this, he must first have sex with a man, presented in the form of a succubus (which is achieved by reviving a female corpse or forming a female body for himself from the four elements), and then, having transformed into an incubus, enter into a relationship with a woman and pass on to her the previously received semen ( Sum. Theol. 1.51.3; reply to objection 6).

The widespread modern depictions of Satan, dressed in a tuxedo (or, better yet, in a tailcoat with a white tie), with small horns and a narrow pointed tail, undoubtedly appeared under the influence of the appearance of Mephistopheles in the operas of Berlioz, Boisto and Gounod about Faust.

But now we are in the world of pure imagination, and it is time to turn to the modern world.

This text is an introductory fragment.

Often, depicting and using any symbols, many do not think where they came from, what meaning they have. Below is an explanation of some of the symbols and signs related to the sphere of Satanism. We advise you to read, as wearing and displaying such things can be very dangerous ...

An inverted pictogram that forms a goat's head. This emblem can be found on the cover of The Satanic Bible. It is present in the symbols of such metal bands as Slayer, Venom, etc. This is a very serious sign, which almost always speaks of involvement in Satanism.

The word "Pentagram" comes from two Greek words - "five" and "line". And in fact, it is a regular pentagon, on each side of which isosceles triangles of equal height are built. The pentagram is one of the oldest religious symbols known to mankind. The first images were found on objects belonging to the Sumerian civilization. It was used by the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Babylonians, Chinese and Celts. For all peoples, the image of the pentagram was associated with magic. According to the main theories, the pentagram is a graphic image or a formula for the correct interaction of the magician and the elements.
The pentagram as a graphic figure has a rather large set of properties - this is the possession of five-ray symmetry, and the construction according to the rules of the golden section. And, of course, the fact that the pentagram is the simplest form of a star, which can be depicted without ever tearing off the pen from the paper and never once drawing a line twice. There are 10 different ways to depict a pentagram. In the practice of magic, the method of drawing the pentagram is very important and affects the type of magical effect. If the lines began to be drawn clockwise, then this is creative magic, if against, then it is destructive.
Along with the direction of the lines, the direction of the ray symbolizing "spirit" is also important. If the ray is directed upwards, this implies the subordination of the spirit to the elements and participation in the life of the surrounding world. The downward direction of the ray is an attempt to direct all the elements towards the "spirit", as if to gather them into a fist in order to change the current world.
The inverted pentagram was not originally a symbol of evil. In the ancient writings of Kabbalah, the inverted pentagram is the so-called "Little Face" of the Lord. And the Roman Emperor Constantine has an inverted pentagram on the seal.
But over time, this powerful occult symbol began to acquire a negative connotation and is more often used in the practice of black magic. From the Pythagorean tradition came the image of the head of a goat or a ram, inscribed in a pentagram. This was a reference to Mendes' Goat, the symbol of the Egyptian god Neter Amun (Set). Seth was described as a latent force that permeates all of nature and the essence of its phenomena.
The famous occultist Eliphas Levi fixed the meaning of the symbol of Satan behind the inverted pentagram. In his book "Teaching and Ritual of Higher Magic" he wrote: "A pentagram with two ascending ends represents Satan in the form of a goat at the Sabbath."
And it was relatively recently possible to finally form the image of the symbol of Satanism. In 1966, Anton LaVey registered the Church of Satan. And the Sigil of Baphomet was chosen as the main symbol. This symbol is now a registered trademark for Satanism. It is used in the rites of black magic in order to enhance the ritual and / or to benefit from the higher demons. Strong black magic is impossible without the use of the symbol of the inverted pentagram in its original form,

INVERTED CROSS
It denotes ridicule and hatred of the cross of Jesus Christ. Many Satanists walk with this symbol. Appears on Danzid Ozzy and Osborne album covers. It is also a serious symbol for belief in Satan.

The Cross of St. Peter (also known as the inverted cross) is a common Latin cross (depicted according to Roman Catholic tradition) inverted 180 degrees. The cross of St. Peter from the 4th century is one of the symbols of St. Peter, who, according to church tradition, was crucified head down in 67 AD. during the reign of the emperor Nero in Rome. The origin of this symbol is associated with the church tradition that the Apostle Peter was crucified on the cross upside down at his own request, because he considered himself unworthy to die the same death that Jesus Christ died. Due to the fact that Peter is considered the founder of the Catholic Church, this symbol is depicted on the throne of the Pope. For example, during his visit to Israel, Pope John Paul II sat on a throne with a cross carved in the back.
The inverted Christian cross can be understood as an anti-Christian symbol. Because of this, the inverted cross has become widespread in modern mass culture as a symbol of Satanism. In popular culture, including films such as Emily Rose's Six Demons, The Omen, and Supernatural, the inverted cross is often shown as a symbol of Satan. Along with the inverted pentagram, the inverted cross is sometimes used by black metal musicians.

In any case, in Roman Catholicism, the cross of St. Peter is not considered a satanic symbol. However, the inverted crucifixion carries a sense of extreme disrespect for the Christian religion and can be used to represent the powers of Satan. The differences between the cross of St. Peter and the inverted crucifix are sometimes obscured, leading to confusion over the acceptability of each symbol. A similar confusion arose after the aforementioned Pope's visit to Israel. A photograph of the Pope seated on a throne with the cross of St. Peter was circulated on the Internet and was used in attempts to "prove" that the Catholic Church is associated with Satanism

The number of the beast is a special number mentioned in the Bible, under which the name of the apocalyptic beast is hidden; numerological embodiment of Satan's henchman. The number of the beast is 666. The number 666 is a very often used element of satanic attributes, along with an inverted cross and an inverted pentagram.

It was often believed that the Antichrist was depicted in the Bible under the guise of an apocalyptic beast. Since the Revelation of St. John says: “He who has a mind, count the number of the beast, for this is a human number,” therefore they tried to find the number 666 in the name or appearance of every person in whom the Antichrist was seen. These searches are actively continuing to this day.

In research related to the "number of the beast", a mistake is often made: the number is decomposed into decimal places and represented in the form of three digits 6, with which it is identified. However, at the time of the writing of the Apocalypse, there was no decimal positional number system, which arose in India only in the VI century AD. e. The original Greek notation consists of the three words "six hundred", "sixty" and "six" and does not allow for the decomposition described. Another common consequence of mistakenly identifying a number with its decimal positional notation is the association of the numbers "666" with the infinite decimal fraction 0.6666 ... equal to two thirds. In the Bible, the number "666" is used four times. Of these, one is mentioned in the New Testament as a number under which the name of the apocalyptic beast is hidden:

Here is wisdom. He who has intelligence, count the number of the beast, for it is a human number; his number is six hundred and sixty-six.

John the Evangelist, Rev. 13:18, 15: 2

In addition to the fact that the numbers: 666 and 13 - fall on the 13th chapter of the Revelation of the Bible (John the Evangelist), which describes the number 666 (= 18) in verse 18, which will surprise the uninitiated, these numbers have literal affinity. We always pronounce numbers in sounds, which are symbolized by the letters that form the Word.
So in Numberology, the number of Words: THIRTEEN = 144 and SIX HUNDRED (156) + SIXTY (184) + SIX (101) = 441.
These are numbers: 18 and 45, i.e. nine.
Words: LADDER 108 TRUTH 45. TRUE 45 PEOPLE 81.

We have a special relationship with these numbers, which we have heard from many people who are determined to expect something bad from these numbers.
Can the numbers 1 through 9 be good or bad? Can the letters from "A" to "Z" be one better than the other. We may only like a certain number or letter, we may not like it ... But this does not mean that what we do not like is bad, and what we like is good. Each symbol just has its own personal meaning.
Someone did not like the number made up of two digits - 13, someone out of three - 666. Let's try to understand these numbers in order to have at least some certainty and our own attitude to them.

Number 13 = 4, and number 666 (18) = 9. Two "root" digits are obtained: 4 and 9, which in total is still number 13, since the number 9 = 0 and does not change any number. Nine can hide in any number. The number 6 (similar to the number 9), taken three times, also gives the total - 9.
The resulting two numbers stand out from all the numbers in that when one digit increases to two, all numbers from 1 to 9, substituting Zero (0), do not remain the same when pronouncing only these two numbers: 4, as "Forty" and 9, as " Ninety".
After pronouncing single-digit numbers, we say: "Ten", keeping this number at the end of the pronunciation of numbers in sound, like "Ten" (10) and "Twenty" - "Two-Twenty" (20), "Three-Twenty" (30 ), “...” (40), “Five-Ten” (50), “Six-Ten” (60), “Seven-Ten” (70), “Eight-Ten” (80) and “...” (90 ).
"..." - the soundings of numbers in the words: "Forty" and "Ninety" fall under the gap. Where have "Twenty" or "Ten" gone?

Numerology of the word Ninety in the name itself hides this number - NINE (DE I ST) - TEN, and the remaining letters (in but o) - "new", indicate something new.
It means that the OLD is over, to which the End has come, the End - TIME, FORTY.
These numbers mean the finiteness of a period, which means that changes are coming. People are afraid of these numbers because changes are not always pleasing - it is better to let it be as it is, so it is calmer. And if these people are esoteric ...? How do they feel about these numbers, if, according to the laws of the Cosmos, they are ready to leave the Cycle of birth and death, for which this change is needed. They will be happy with these numbers, they will be attracted to them, and not shunned and feared, like ordinary people.

Number 666 = 9. Nines in number 666 repeat the number 74 nine times, and this is the word TIME. This means that the FUTURE 88 = 16 = 7 has already taken place and should go into the PAST 112, which is the number 13 = 4. Therefore, very SOON (Forty, Term) we must wait for what will be the END 73 after the LIFE 72 lived, when everything will already be measured - TIME 74. The end is not necessarily human life, but events: either bad or good. And if we want to get rid of the annoying disease, then the number 666 will be beneficial for us. It leads after TIME 74 to CROSS 75 (the next number after 74), so that you can “disown” some event. Then OUTPUT 76 appears so that you can find the SOURCE 77 of another, new event (for example, recovery, if there was a disease).
So, it turns out: 70 or 79 - BASE or ROOT.
71 - BEGINNING (of life).
72 - LIFE.
73 - END (of life).
74 - TIME (everything, the period is measured).
75 - CROSS.
76 - EXIT.
77 - SOURCE.
78 - FATE.
= 666.

7 (sevens) - number 9, sum (7 x 9) = 63 = 9.
Numbers from 1 to 8 (9 = 0) total = 36 = 9.
Numbers 63 and 36 –––> 6336 = 666.
Three 3 sixes 6 –––> 666. Words with the number 36: MIND 63, MOVEMENT 63, FACE 63, WAY 63, EVOLUTION 162 (LIFE 72) = 36, HISTORY 126, TRIUMPH 126 = 36.

With numbers: 77 and 78 - the SOURCE of a new FATE begins.
Something about the number 666 can be found on the site in article 13 "NAME" (catalog of articles).

One story.

Two people got married in such a way that their parents (or one of the parties) did not know about it. They carefully concealed their passports so that the seal was not visible, but lived apart, meeting at one or the other in the apartment (apparently, the parents were against this union). In the summer we lived the weekend at his dacha. She was not opposed to opening everything, but He insisted on this, whose desire She did not violate. So some time passed, and in the third year of their secret marriage, and seven years of communication, the secret was revealed.
Suddenly, being with her at the dacha, He remembers that he left his passport at home ...
Going home, They go on the road. On the way, they were constantly overtaken by cars with different numbers, but three times they came across numbers with three sixes - 666. Having heard about this number, they understood that something was going to happen, especially since their passport was forgotten. Maybe they would not have met this number or did not pay attention if they had not been afraid of exposing the secret ?!
And, indeed, His mother found a marriage stamp in her passport ...
Further, the development of events is no longer so important, the main thing is that they received the Sign of events already taking place. The END of the concealment of the secret took place, and a new BEGINNING was “born” - reality.
Anything can end, because different people live with different fears and fears. And someone, on the contrary, wants to start something ...
It can be assumed that the mother, before finding the passport, could have a sign in the number 13, because this is a sign of CHANGE (DEATH is the 13th Major Arcana in Tarot cards). She might not notice him because of her lack of observation. The Mystery was revealed to her, becoming Reality.

CHURCH OF SATAN
It is a symbol of the Satanic Church in San Francisco. It is also found in The Satanic Bible in the Ninth Satanic Commandment. This mark has been found on several rock and metal albums, such as "Seven and the Ragged Tigen" by Duran Duran. This emblem always speaks of being reckoned with Satan.

The Church of Satan is a countercultural group founded in the USA by Anton LaVey and which "proclaims itself a conscious bearer of evil and the antipode of Christianity." The first officially registered organization to declare Satanism as its ideology. The Great Encyclopedia Terra notes that the Church of Satan is "chronologically the first of the Satanic sects." At the same time, the current leader of the organization, Peter Gilmore, says that "atheism is primary, and Satanism is secondary."
The official symbol of the Church of Satan is the seal of Baphomet.
The Church of Satan was founded on Walpurgis Night (April 30) 1966 in San Francisco by Anton Sandor LaVey, later author of The Satanic Bible (1969). 1966 was named by him as the first year of the Satanic era. LaVey was the high priest of the Church of Satan until his death (1966-1997).

From background: in the 1950s, Anton LaVey organized the Trapezoid Order, which later became the governing body of the Church of Satan. Among those who participated in LaVey's events were "Baroness" Karin de Plessen, who grew up in the Royal Palace in Denmark, Dr. Cecil Nixon, eccentric magician and inventor, Kenneth Anger, underground filmmaker, Russell Walden, city legal advisor, Donald Werby, one of San Francisco's most influential private owners, anthropologist Michael Harner, writer Shana Alexander, and others. Also comrades of LaVey during this time period were science fiction and horror writers Anthony Bucher, August Derlett, Robert Barbour Johnson, Reginald Bretnor, Emile Petaya, Stuart Palmer, Clark Ashton Smith, Forrest J. Ackerman and Fritz Leiber.

On February 1, 1967, Anton LaVey held an open satanic wedding ceremony for radical journalist John Raymond and Judith Cays, which attracted significant media attention to the Church of Satan. The ceremony was photographed by San Francisco Chronicle-based Joe Rosenthal, author of the iconic photograph of the American military raising the flag on Mount Suribati during World War II. Photos of the Satanic wedding were published in several reputable publications.

In May of the same year, the ceremony of “satanic baptism” of LaVey's three-year-old daughter Zina Galatea takes place. The journalists, who arrived long before the ceremony began, were fascinated by the angelic smile of a girl who was to be dedicated to the devil. Satanic Baptism was designed to please a child.

Another important event (December 1967) was the holding of an open satanic funeral of Church of Satan member naval officer Edward Olson at the request of his wife, and Satanism was soon added to the register of officially recognized religions in the United States.

In June 1967, Jane Mansfield died in a car accident, according to LaVey, who had a close relationship with LaVey and was a priestess of the Church of Satan. Despite the fact that these claims were false [source unspecified 638 days], the tabloid press declared the death of the actress as a by-product of the curse that LaVey allegedly sent on Mansfield partner Sam Brody.

The Church of Satan was mentioned in many books, magazines and newspapers in the 1960s and 1970s. Also in 1970, the full-length documentary "Satanis" was released. Anton LaVey starred in Kenneth Anger's Invocation of my Demon Brother, and was technical consultant for The Devil's Rain, which stars Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner and (for the first time) John Travolta. It has also been claimed that LaVey unofficially played the role of the Devil in Rosemary's Baby, but this claim was later denied. The Church of Satan was also featured in Luigi Scatini's film Angeli Blanca, Angeli Negra (known at the American box office as Witchcraft '70).

In 1975, LaVey began to reshape the Church of Satan's grotto system, getting rid of people who, he believed, sought to succeed in organizing simply to compensate for their failures in the outside world. Subsequently, real success in life became one of the criteria for advancement within the Church of Satan. During the same period, Anton LaVey became more selective when giving interviews. This transition to "closed" activities led to rumors about the collapse of the organization and even about the death of LaVey.

The 1980s saw a new wave of mass hysteria, criminal conspiracy theories and fear of Satanism, started by Protestant fundamentalists, some doctors and the media. During this period, Church of Satan members such as Peter Gilmore, Peggy Nadramia, Boyd Rice, Adam Parfrey, Diabolos Rex, and rock musician King Diamond were active in the media to refute the false accusations of the Church of Satan's criminal activities by Christian evangelists. Subsequently, the FBI issued an official report refuting all the criminal conspiracy theories of the period. This social phenomenon is called the "Satanic Panic".

During the 1980s and 1990s, the Church of Satan and its members were very active in the production of films, music and magazines dedicated to Satanism. Among the most significant are Adam Parfrey's Feral House publishing house, Boyd Rice's music, Nick Bugas's films (including the documentary Speak of the Devil: The Canon of Anton LaVey). Church of Satan and Anton LaVey featured in many magazines and news articles of the time.

In 1997, after the death of Anton Sandor LaVey, Blanche Barton, his common-law wife, became the head of the Church of Satan. Although to this day Barton is involved in the Church of Satan, in 2001 she ceded her posts to Peter Gilmore and Peggy Nadramia, who are today the high priest and priestess of the organization and publish The Black Flame, the official journal of the Church of Satan. The Church of Satan's headquarters have also moved from San Francisco to New York, where they live.

In the fall of 2004, the British Armed Forces officially register the first Satanist - Technical Service Sergeant Chris Cranmer, serving on the frigate Cumberland, Admiral John "Sandy" Woodward said on this occasion that

My first words when I heard about this incident were, “God, what the hell is going on here? When I served in the navy, some of my colleagues were Anglicans, others were Catholics, and I had never heard of any Satanists. In my opinion, this is extremely strange "

Satan is the master of hell and the main enemy of God. He represents all the dark forces. In his submission is a huge number of demons and other various evil spirits. Adherents turn to him for help. Many are interested in what kind of Satan he really is and whether it is possible to see him during his lifetime. Some sources agree that the Devil can change his images, transforming into different people, animals and creatures.

What does Satan look like?

A description of the Devil can be found in the Bible. It says that Satan was originally an angel who stood out for his beauty, wisdom and perfection. When he decided that he was worthy to be equal to God, he was expelled from paradise. For the first time, Satan is mentioned in the first pages of the Bible, when he tempted Eve in the form of a serpent. He also meets in the form of Leviathan - a huge sea creature that can fly like a dragon. Numerous images and incarnations make it impossible to define and understand what kind of Satan. In a new guise, the Devil appears in the Apocalypse and there he is represented as a red dragon with seven heads and ten horns.

It is impossible to say with certainty what color Satan is, since there are completely conflicting opinions, so someone claims that he is black, while others point to red. There is even an opinion suggested by Satanists that the color of demons is not in the human. Thanks to modern technology, it is possible to determine the intended color. To do this, use hexadecimal codes. Scientists have long assigned a specific number to each color, used, for example, in web design. If, using a program, for example, Photoshop, enter the devil's number - 666666, then you can get a specific color.

What does the sign of Satan look like?

People who know the power of various symbols argue that some satanic signs have tremendous power and, if used incorrectly, can have negative consequences. To prevent this from happening, it is important to understand what this or that sign means:
