Studios and printing houses are able to print photographs of different sizes - from miniature rectangles "for a passport" to solid photographs 30x60 cm and non-standard versions. It is not always clear which format to choose in order not to see digital "noise" on paper and get the same clarity as a monitor. What are the formats of photos for printing? How to navigate them, taking into account a specific goal? About this - in our article.

    Typical format table

Photographic paper manufacturers have set international standards for print sizes. The proportions in these standards do not correspond to the proportions in the matrices of digital cameras, which adds complexity to customers (who are accustomed to the A6 ... A0 marking for plain paper and are confused in other symbols and tables) and printing workers (who have to adjust and manually crop pictures).

Print format Exact format size in mm Photo resolution for printing 300dpi
    9 × 13 89 × 127 1051 × 1500
    10 × 15 102 × 152 1205 × 1795
    13 × 18 127 × 178 1500 × 2102
    15 × 20 152 × 203 1795 × 2398
    15 × 21 152 × 216 1795 × 2551
    20 × 30 203 × 305 2398 × 3602
    30 × 40 305 × 406 3602 × 4795
    30 × 45 305 × 457 3602 × 5398
    30 × 90 305 × 914 3602 × 10795

    Photo paper 10 × 15 cm roughly corresponds to a sheet of ordinary A6 paper, 15 × 21 cm - A5, 30 × 30 - A4, 30 × 40 and 30 × 45 - A3, 30 × 60 - A2.

If the table of formats and sizes of photographs for printing has not clarified, and the marking A6, A5, A4, A3 ... A0 does not come out of my head, you should prudently order a larger picture and ask the staff of the printing house to crop it to the usual format.

For example: you want a full color A6 image at 300 dpi. In this case, order a printout on paper 15 × 21 cm and cut the excess, because the 10x15 format, which is close to the A6, will be 2 mm smaller on one side than the A6.

The photo paper formats will look like this:

Purpose of printout and standard print sizes in cm

    • The timeless classic - 10 × 15 cm.Such a picture will fit into any family album and frame, people with average vision will easily see it, in a small room a 10 × 15 cm image will look good on the wall both solo and next to others.
    • A4 (arranged on photo paper - 20 × 30 cm) should be ordered for wall decoration. Both in a commercial interior and in a spacious room, the picture will look representative and bright.
    • 30 × 40 and 40 × 50 cm are large images that are desirable to be viewed from a distance. Usually these sizes are chosen for interior decoration with an emphasis on decor. The resolution of 300 dpi, which is typical for small pictures, is not enough in this case: a large picture is visible to everyone at once, so it must be clear and free of "noise", so you should take care of shooting with a modern digital camera.
    • Printing portraits for documents involves the use of photo sizes for printing in cm. So, for a passport you need a portrait of 3.7 × 4.7 cm, for issuing an identity card - 3 × 4 cm, for obtaining a visa - 3.5 × 4.5 cm, for a type pass - 6 × 9 cm.

Choose the right paper so as not to worry about adjusting the picture with wide white borders and not thinking about how to return the part of the image that does not fit. All printing houses, photo salons and websites usually have tables of formats. You can also ask the employee for help via feedback on the website, by phone or by contacting him personally upon arrival at the studio.

Any digital photograph is essentially a program file that stores information about the image obtained by digitizing each of its points and how and when it was taken. The data structure of this information is called photo file format or in another way a file photo format.

There are many such formats, and all of them are of the graphic type. They differ in the information compression algorithm, specification and purpose. Each photo file format has been designed for a different purpose and suits them better than others. For example, for storing images, processing or posting them on the Internet.

There is one way to get your original digital photograph. It is necessary to project a frame of a future photograph onto a matrix consisting of many light-sensitive photocells, measure the signal level of each of them and write all these values \u200b\u200binto the photo file. This division of the photo into separate points - pixels is called a raster, and the format of its file is raster (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1 Any digital photograph consists of individual pixels, information about which is stored in a raster file.

There are two main devices to make a bitmap photo file - a digital camera or. But at the same time, the number of formats in which you can save photo files is limited. To obtain photo files of a different format, they must be converted in a special program (Fig. 2).

We are often asked: - "Can you print A4 photos?"

Of course, we can print photos of almost any size, but this issue requires clarification.

Photo paper formats differ from international ISO formats, but most often in our everyday life we \u200b\u200boperate with terms and sizes that are familiar to us, such as A4, Whatman paper, etc. Although photo paper sizes and common sizes are quite similar, they are still different from each other.

The main photo formats have an aspect ratio similar to matrices of modern digital cameras 1: 1.5 (2/3) or 1: 1.33 (3/4). International standard paper sizes have an aspect ratio of 1: 1.4142, which means they do not have the same aspect ratio. Photo standards are used when printing on Noritsu minilabs. Also such familiar to us photo frames and photo albums for storing photos correspond to photo standards.

This table shows the ratio of the photo formats that we print to standard paper.

Photo format that we print Photo size in px Photo size in mm Aspect ratio ISO standard ISO size in mm
    10x15 1217x1807 103x153 2:3 ≈A6 105x148

    20x30 2409x3614 204x306 2:3 ≈A4 210x297
    30x40 3614x4972 306x421 3:4 ≈A3 297x420

    30x60 3614x7217 306x611 1:2 ≈A2 420x594

Now let's take a closer look at each of the photo formats. The popular 10x15 format is 2 mm smaller on one side than the standard A6, and 5 mm larger on the other. Therefore, if you need the A6, you should order a 15x21 photo and crop the excess manually.

Below you can see how the 10x15 format compares with the well-known A4.

Photo 15x21 will be slightly larger than sheet A5. On one side by 5 mm, on the other - by 1 mm. Therefore, if you need the A5, feel free to order a 15x21 photo, cut off the excess.

Below you can see the ratio of 15x21 to A4.

The 20x30 format is almost A4, but the photo is 6 mm smaller on one side, and 9 mm larger on the other than A4. 20x30 and A4 are disproportionate.

Below is the ratio of the photo 20x30 to A4.

If you need A3, then choose a 30x40 photo. 30x40 by 9 mm on one side and 1 mm on the other more than A3. Calmly order and cut it yourself \u003d).

Below you can see the ratio of 30x40 and A3.

Photo 30x45 is larger than A3. This can be seen in the picture below.

Photo 30x60 is difficult to compare with ordinary paper. 30x60 is significantly smaller than A2 (Whatman paper) and significantly larger than A3. But this does not prevent 30x60 pictures from being popular among photographers.

Below you can see the ratio of the photo 30x60 to A3.

Below is the ratio of photo formats to each other.

We need it, for example, when we want to print our photo in darkroom. Modern cameras give us the opportunity to take pictures in very high resolutions, but when editing in photo editors and cropping, we get frames of an arbitrary size. In order not to receive at all what you need when printing, save yourself a table where photo dimensions in cm... Perhaps you do not use, or are simply not very familiar with the Photoshop editor, then these files will come in handy for you. Here is the full version as well for the standard sizes. Insert your photo into the finished PSD files, save and send to print. All PSD files are in 300 dpi (300 dpi) resolution, this is done to ensure that the quality of the photo is at a high level.

    Standard photo sizes usually used like this: 10 × 15, 15 × 20, 20 × 30. So that you can imagine right away, remember: 20 × 30 is a sheet of A4 size, 15 × 20 is half of A4, called A5.

If you need more detailed list sizes, see the table below.
