    Introduction

At the international exhibition MWC 2015, LG demonstrated three not very expensive devices under the names Spirit, Magna and Leon. We have already met the first two. The review was made for both devices at once, since they differed little from each other. Of course, Leon should have been included in the text, but at that time he was not available for testing.

What is Leon? This is a smartphone, simple to the limit, on the latest version of the system - Lollipop. Equipped with the most common budget chipset from MediaTek, less than 1 GB of RAM inside, the battery and camera are average, but the price is not the highest: now you can buy LG Leon from 7,000 rubles.

Who is this model for? Most likely, for those who care about the brand, that is, the A-brand, the price "ceiling" is up to 8,000 - 9,000 rubles, and the technical characteristics of the gadget are not too important. By the way, a large number of letters come to my mail with just such a request. Here you are, just what you wanted: a nice smartphone for calls, social networks and the Internet.

    Design, dimensions, controls

Devices LG Spirit, Magna and Leon are similar in terms of not only parameters, but also appearance: slightly oval-shaped top and bottom edges, a sloping back, a plastic case for metal and the obligatory presence of two mechanical volume control buttons and a power button on the back of the device ... That is, in fact, only the size of the device changes due to the fact that different screen diagonals are used. I don't like this decision. It is difficult to stand out: either you have a cheap Leon, or more expensive Spirit or Magna. Some mobile phone users are bothering with just this.

Leon's dimensions are 129x64x10.9 mm. As always, the device is fat, despite the fact that the battery costs only 1900 mAh. I do not understand the LG developers at all: the old L7 Dual with a 2460 battery is 9.7 mm thick, not so long ago the LG L Bello with a 2540 battery and a 10.7 mm case thickness was reviewed. Question: how can you manage to make the device thicker with less battery capacity?

The Leon fits perfectly in the hand thanks to the comfortable lid with an ergonomic design. The gadget is definitely suitable for those who want a device that is small in size, and still reduce the thickness to quite adequate 7 - 8 mm.

LG is sold in three color options: gold, white and gray (officially called "Titan"). We have glamorous gold on the test. It looks, by the way, very good: the front side is dark, part of the lower front edge of the device is gold, some of the side edges are dark, the panel is gold. The surface is matte, but slightly rough to the touch, since there are small longitudinal notches (as if polished metal). Over time, the lid will wear off, since there are those same notches. The assembly is excellent, there are no complaints: there is no creak or backlash, the back side does not bend up to the battery.

There is an oleophobic coating on the screen. It is not of the highest quality, but it’s better than without it at all, as on the LG G2 mini: the device is expensive, but does not have such an important component. The finger glides on the Leon's screen well.

Above center is the speech speaker. Its volume is slightly above average, the interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly, the timbre is pleasant: there are both low and high frequencies. To the right of the speaker is the proximity sensor and front camera. LG decided to save money on the light sensor - a minus. You will manually adjust the brightness slider. This is not the first time I've come across LG devices without this sensor.

The buttons are on-screen, under the display there is only the company logo.

At the bottom there is a microUSB and a microphone, on the top there is a second microphone and a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones. Traditionally, there are no elements left and right. Rear: camera peephole, flash, speaker and power button flanked by two mechanical volume keys. The power button is silvery, slightly convex, has concentric notches, the pressure is relatively tight, the stroke is small.

The cover is removed by prying it off by the notch of the microUSB connector. Under the panel at the bottom right is a microSD slot, under the battery on the left is SIM2, on the right is SIM1.

LG Leon and Highscreen Power Five

LG Leon and Apple iPhone 5 (in case)

    Display

This device uses a 4.5-inch screen. The physical size is 55.5x98 mm, the frame at the top is 13.5 mm, at the bottom - 17 mm, on the right and left - about 4.5 mm each. There is an anti-reflective coating, which is quite effective.

The resolution of the Leon display from LG is FWVGA, that is, 480x854 pixels, the aspect ratio is 16: 9, the density is 217 pixels per inch. IPS matrix without air gap.

The maximum brightness for white is 276 cd / m2, the maximum brightness for black is 0.34 cd / m2. Contrast - 800: 1.

The white line is the goal we are trying to achieve. The yellow line (average amount of red, green and blue) is the actual screen data. You can see that we are directly below the target curve, which means that for every value between 45 and 97, the image is dark.

The average gamma value is 2.

Judging by the level graph, there is a clear excess of blue, and the value "jumps" depending on the brightness: there is a lot of blue at the minimum brightness.

The temperature is approximately the same throughout the entire brightness range. On average, about 7700 K.

Judging by the diagram, the data obtained does not correspond to the sRGB triangle: it is noticeable that the green and red colors are lacking.

All gray points were located outside the DeltaE = 10 radius, which indicates that other shades of colors will be present in the grays.

The viewing angles are maximum, at the corners the picture turns a little violet and yellow, and the brightness is also greatly reduced.

If you do not go into details, I did not like the screen: I would like to have a higher brightness of the backlight, richer colors. However, for the money, the display is quite normal.

    Viewing angles

    Flare

    Settings

There is a double tap to activate the backlight.

    Battery

This model uses a removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh. There is no official data on the opening hours.

Despite the small battery capacity, Leon "lives" more or less normally: about 12 hours in normal mode (few calls, network - Wi-Fi, and so on). I think the "fault" here lies in the display (weak backlighting), on the gluttonous chipset, on the optimized version of the OS. The commercials "spin" for about 6 hours at maximum brightness, in the phone mode it functions for about a couple of days (every day for 4 hours of calls). However, in an active mode of use, LG Leon should count on a maximum of 5-6 hours.

    Communication capabilities

The device works only in 2G / 3G networks (GSM 900/1800 MHz, WCDMA 900/2100 MHz). For some reason, the frequencies 850 MHz and 1900 MHz are missing. At least such data are indicated on the official website. You can switch between SIM cards using a special button.

There is no NFC chip, OTG mode does not work. The rest is standard for any Android smartphone: GPS, Wi-Fi b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0.

    Memory and memory card

In this case, the manufacturer saves again: there is only 768 MB of RAM inside. Frankly speaking, even the cheapest modern devices have been using 1 GB for a long time. Built-in memory "with a gulkin's nose", 4 GB, and one and a half gigabytes are available. It's good that there is a slot for a memory card, the maximum volume is 32 GB.

    Cameras

Traditionally, there are two camera modules: 5 MP (F2.7 aperture) and 0.3 MP (F3 aperture). The flash is one-section.

Naturally, there is no need to talk about good quality in this case, alas. The picture is relatively decent only in good lighting conditions. As soon as artificial lighting appears or twilight comes, it is useless to photograph: the photos are muddy, the detail is zero, the white balance "floats". Only quick and accurate focus saves the day.

The front camera is a shame and a shame. The videos are written in a resolution of 640x480 pixels.

The camera shoots video in FullHD resolution at 30 fps. The quality is average, the sharpness is instantly directed at a click on the screen, the sound is mono.

    Sample photos

    Performance

The LG Leon device uses the most common among budget smartphones MediaTek chipset - MT6582 two years ago: 4 ARM Cortex-A7 cores with a clock frequency of 1.3 GHz, the chip is made using 28 nm technology. As graphics - Mali-400 MP2.

Smartphone LG Leon, despite its budget, is actively keeping up with the times, offering the user the latest OS Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

    Introduction

South Korean giant LG literally "stunned" users around the world with smartphones, among which the curved Spirit and Magna models stand out. About the latter, our reviews are in the very near future, and in this article we will consider the budget Leon model, which was released simultaneously with Magna and Spirit. Thus, the South Koreans are striving to cover all sectors of the market, which is quite reasonable.

    Specifications LG Leon

    Display 4.5 ”FWVGA IPS
    Chipset 4 cores, 1.3 GHz
    RAM / ROM / Flash 768 MB / 4 GB / microSD up to 32 GB
    Cameras front: VGA;
    rear: 5 MP, autofocus.
    Connection Wi-Fi 802.11b / g / n; Bluetooth 4.1; USB 2.0; WiFi Direct
    FM +
    Networks 2G; 3G
    Battery 1900 mAh
    OS Android 5.0.1 (Lollipop)
    SIM Dual-SIM
    Navigation A-GPS
    Dimensions (edit) 64.9 x 129.9 x 10.9
    mm
    Weight 135 g

    Appearance

The body shape of the LG Leon may seem curved, but this impression is made due to the slightly "humped" back, where the main camera and the original control are located. The edges of the body are rounded. The material used is plastic, which can easily be mistaken for black metal. There are also other color options: silky white or shining gold. Sounds and looks beautiful. It would be foolish to expect a slimmer case from a budget model, so the dimensions of the Leon ended up as follows: 64.9 x 129.9 x 10.9 mm. That is, by today's standards, this is a fairly "well-fed" smartphone, although not too heavy (135 g). The front panel houses the front-facing camera, screen, speaker, sensors and a light panel below, bringing variety to the design. The downside is equipped with a rear camera, LED flash and a proprietary control button from LG. A battery is placed under the back cover, as well as slots for installing two SIM-cards of the MicroSIM type and one memory card. The USB connector and microphone are located at the bottom. The top of the case is occupied by an audio jack and a noise canceling microphone.

    Equipment

The delivery set is usual: the smartphone itself, charger and paper documentation.

    Screen

In the display of the novelty, the In-Cell Touch technology is used, which made it possible to reduce the thickness of the display. In addition to subtlety, it provides instant touch response as well as improved image quality. The display itself has a diagonal size of 4.5 inches. The resolution is 854 x 480 (FWVGA) with a pixel density of 220 dpi. The IPS matrix provides wide viewing angles and vivid rich color reproduction. True, the model does not have as much brightness reserve as we would like, which is why the screen will glare a little in the bright sun. There is no oleophobic coating here, so fingerprints on the screen are inevitable for Leon.

    Camera

Leon has a modest front-facing camera of VGA standard, but with its own "twist". The fact is that LG engineers supplied it with ... a flash! However, not mechanical, but "virtual" - the display acted as a source of bright light. It is very original and, I must admit, effective - pictures with such a "virtual" flash are clear and bright. The main camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels and is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. The maximum resolution for video recording can reach FullHD. Let's note the possibilities of shooting with one touch and by hand gesture. In the latter case, the person squeezes the palm and after three seconds takes a photo without touching the smartphone control buttons. The distance from which the camera recognizes gestures has been increased in the Leon to 1.5 m.

    Sound

The model is equipped with a standard audio jack for connecting a headset and is capable of playing audio in MP3, OGG, AAC, MID, AMR, FLAC and WAV formats. Built-in FM radio. Voice communication is quite at the level of world standards - the interlocutors hear each other clearly, the speakers do not "wheeze".

    Performance

The hero of our review has a quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz. Specifically - "Chinese" MediaTek MT6582 (4 cores Cortex-A7) with a graphics core Mali-400. It's nice to note that the Leon has 768 MB of RAM instead of 512 MB. Still, even such an increase in RAM has a positive effect on the overall performance of the smartphone. The built-in memory is only 4 gigabytes, but it can be expanded with a memory card with a capacity of up to 32 GB. In general, Leon is suitable for everyday tasks, as well as for launching not too resource-demanding 3D toys.

    Software and autonomy

Leon has a bright sign of the times - the freshest operating system Google Android 5.0.1 (Lollipop) with a proprietary LG UX interface. In addition to purely "cosmetic" changes, Lollipop now features HD Voice, a new smartphone protection system and (finally!) The implementation of work with two SIM-cards. Previously, the vendor independently solved the problem of implementing the operation of an Android device (smartphone or tablet) with two SIM cards. And Leon just supports the work with two SIM cards. With regard to HD Voice, this option expands the frequency range of the sound during a call, improving the quality of voice transmission. The Device Protection function locks the device if it is lost or stolen until the owner is verified in the Google system and removes the lock.
If Leon is in complete order with the OS, then the battery capacity causes a certain skepticism. The removable battery capacity of the model is only 1900 mAh. However, with an average load (calls, periodic Internet access and photography), the smartphone should be enough for 1.5-2 days of battery life.

    Communication capabilities

Leon supports dual SIM, as we mentioned above. Two SIM cards operate on the basis of one radio module. There is a special on-screen key to switch between them. For Internet access, a WiFi module is provided, and for data exchange between nearby devices - Bluetooth 4.1. Wi-Fi Direct is available. By the way, Lollipop now has a quick selection of a WiFi network or Bluetooth-device to connect from the "curtain" of quick settings. You can also hide the "Access Point" icon after activation. To work with two SIM-cards, Lollipop provides an interesting opportunity - setting your own colors for contacts associated with a particular network. By the way, the smartphone works in 2G (900/1800) and 3G (900/2100, HSPA + 21 Mbps) networks. The Chinese chipset MediaTek supports only GPS (A-GPS), which is a little sad, because the domestic satellite navigation system GLONASS will not be available to Leon owners.

    conclusions

LG Leon is a striking representative of new generation budget smartphones. As progress continues, inexpensive models also need to keep pace with the times. This is why we see Leon's latest Android 5.0.1 Lollipop operating system, which has noticeable improvements, including dual SIM and device security. The hardware component of the model is quite consistent with its budget - a productive quad-core chipset with 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory, which is expanded by a memory card. We note an excellent 4.5 ″ display of the novelty with In-Cell Touch IPS technology, support for two SIM-cards and such features as gesture and one-touch shooting, activation using a unique combination of Knock Code, as well as the Smart Keyboard function.

P.S. LG Leon is sold in the Svyaznoy store for 7990 rubles, and if you use the Yandex-Market service, you can find it 500 rubles cheaper.

At the MWC 2015, which took place at the end of February, the South Korean LG presented several low-cost models of four-core smartphones running on the latest version of the Android OS. We already wrote about Magna and Spirit a little earlier, now it's the turn of the LG Leon review.

Unlike older models, the novelty is devoid of a curved screen and has more modest characteristics. But the price for it was only about 150 US dollars.

The smartphone has received a strict design characteristic of LG: straight outlines of the side lines and a slightly curved back cover. It is made of gray plastic, but the build quality is up to par, so the smartphone does not look cheap. The front panel is black, and only at the bottom you can see the gray insert. There are also models with white and gold lids, but there were no such ones on our market at the time of writing the review.

Unlike the older "brother" and "sister" (Spirit and Magna), the smartphone is presented in only one version (there is no modification with LTE support). The rest of the characteristics are very close to them.

    CPU

LG Leon uses a budget quad-core processor from the Taiwanese corporation MTK model MT6582. Its clock speed reaches 1.3 GHz, it is identical to the CPU in the Spirit and Magna versions without 4G support.

The smartphone uses a dual-core Mali-400 as a video processor. Due to the lower display resolution, the device's performance is even slightly higher than that of older models. So, the synthetic benchmark AnTuTu shows about 18 thousand points, which is 1000 more than Magna.

    Memory

The amount of RAM has suffered, in comparison with the older devices of the line: it has been reduced by a quarter. 768 MB are not impressive enough these days. For example, you can (at your own peril and risk) purchase a phone with 1 or even 2 GB of RAM from less famous brands from the PRC.

The volume of the LG Leon's internal storage has also decreased and is 4 GB. About half of them are available to download user-generated content. The memory card slot has not gone anywhere, so the issue of expanding disk space is easy to solve.

    Battery

The LG Leon battery is removable, it is made using traditional lithium-ion technology and has a capacity of 1900 mAh. In standby mode, with the Internet turned off, the smartphone is able to hold out for 2-3 days. Under intensive load, the discharge from 100% "to zero" will take 5-7 hours, depending on the display backlight level. The indicators are similar to other devices in the series. The battery capacity drops from the older model to the younger ones, but the screen size also decreases.

    Camera

The smartphone has a budget matrix with a capacity of 5 MP. It is equipped with flash and autofocus, and allows you to get a photo of acceptable quality in bright sunlight. But in the twilight, the detail is significantly reduced. The only thing that the lens can boast of in low light is the ability to photograph text. For such a task, the power of the built-in flash is sufficient. But portraits in such conditions are much worse.

The front camera has a modest VGA sensor, from which you should not expect anything special. If you can still see some details in the “selfie” taken in the sun, then about the pictures in the room we can say: “good, at least he looks like himself”.

    Display

The LG Leon screen, unlike the older models, cannot boast of HD resolution. It uses a budget IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 4.5 inches. Its resolution is 854x480 pixels, and the pixel density is 220 DPI. The touchscreen is made of glass, but lacks an oleophobic coating that prevents the sensor from getting dirty quickly. Therefore, the buyer will have to put up with stains on the screen or always carry a napkin with them to wipe it.

There are no complaints about the contrast and viewing angles of the display (after all, IPS does its job). But the brightness in the sun seems frankly weak. As for the grain, for those tempted to use a Full-HD device, it will seem unnecessarily noticeable. But an inexperienced person may not even pay attention to this.

    Data transfer

Lg Leon is equipped with two slots for SIM cards, the work of which is implemented in the traditional alternating way (both of them work in standby mode, but when making calls, the second goes offline). In the list of supported networks - only 2G and 3G.

Separately, it is worth noting the good implementation of GPS and Wi-Fi antennas. Many inexpensive devices suffer from poor signal strength, especially indoors. LG Leon does not have this drawback.

    Sound

The musical capabilities of a smartphone are quite typical for a device of this class. LG Leon, like most budget devices, is capable of generating loud sound when called, but to enjoy your favorite songs, the clarity of the speakers is not enough for the music lover. In headphones, the situation is much better: both bass and high frequencies are cut slightly.

People who use their smartphone for long conversations will appreciate the active noise canceling system. The second microphone, mounted on the top end, picks up extraneous sounds to separate them from the interlocutor's voice.

    OS

Operating system LG Leon - Android version 5.0.1, the most recent at the time of the release of the device. The proprietary LG UX shell is used as the user interface. A pleasant surprise was the fact that, due to the lower screen resolution, the system speed is slightly higher than that of the same Spirit.

Pros and cons of LG Leon

The main positive features of a smartphone include:

    • decent performance;
    • nice design;
    • loud sound and noise reduction system.

Unfortunately, the LG Leon also has some drawbacks. It:

    Conclusion

LG Leon is a typical “budget employee” for its time. It may not be the most productive device in this price range, but other brands have weaker smartphones. Therefore, the device can be considered quite worth the money. During the review, LG Leon did not find such significant flaws that would be critical. But for those who like to shoot a lot, are used to ultra-clear screens, hold many active tasks at the same time, or often take a smartphone with dirty hands due to the peculiarities of their profession or lifestyle, it will not be the most successful purchase.

Screen type: IPS (In Plane Switching) is a high quality liquid crystal matrix, which was created to eliminate the main disadvantages of TN technology matrices. The IPS-matrix in the entire spectrum most adequately reproduces colors at different angles of view, with the exception of some positions and colors. TN-matrix has, as it were, a better response than IPS, but not always. Thus, the IPS-matrix behaves better during the transition from gray to gray, this matrix is still resistant to pressure. Touching a TN or VA matrix leads to "excitement" or a certain reaction on the screen. The IPS-matrix has no such effect. In addition, ophthalmologists confirm that the IPS-matrix is the most comfortable for the eyes. In this way, the IPS-matrix brings a bright and clear picture regardless of viewing angles, better for working on the Internet, watching movies. But the most important thing is for image processing and photo viewing. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - Liquid crystal displays. The very first displays used in mobile devices, and not only in telephones. Their main feature is that they have very low power consumption due to the impossibility of displaying a color image. They do not emit light and therefore phones are upgraded with backlight lamps. Some phones had several different backlight colors based on the presence of different LEDs around the display's perimeter. This extraordinary solution was used, for example, in the Ericsson A3618 phone. Pixels are clearly visible on this type of display, and such displays cannot boast of a high resolution. In order to extend the life of such displays, they were made inverted, i.e. text and symbols were not displayed as filled pixels, but, on the contrary, inactive against the background of filled ones. This resulted in light text on a dark background. Currently, this type of display is used in the cheapest budget models (Nokia 1112) and as an external one in some clamshell phones (Samsung D830).

TFT (Thin Film Transistor) - Liquid crystal displays based on active matrix thin film transistors. There are three transistors for each pixel, corresponding to three colors (RGB - red, green, blue). At the moment, these are the most common displays and have a number of advantages over other displays. They are characterized by the fastest response time and rapid development - constantly growing resolution and number of colors. These displays are most common in mid-range phones and above. Working resolutions for them: 128x160, 132x176, 176x208, 176x220, 240x320 and others, less common. Examples: Nokia N73 (240x320, 262 thousand colors), Sony Ericsson K750i (176x220, 262 thousand colors), Samsung D900 (240x320, 262 thousand colors). TFTs are rarely used as external displays for clamshells.

CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) - Passive matrix color liquid crystal displays. Each pixel of such a display consists of three combined pixels, which correspond to three colors (RGB). Some time ago, almost all phones with color displays were based on exactly this type. And now the lot of such displays is budget models. The main disadvantage of such displays is their slowness. The undoubted advantage of such displays is their cost, which is much lower than TFT. Based on simple logic, it can be assumed that in the future TFT will oust this type of displays from the market of mobile devices. The color evolution of such displays is quite extensive: from 16 to 65536 colors. Examples: Motorola V177 (128x160, 65 thousand colors), Sony Ericsson J100i (96x64, 65 thousand colors), Nokia 2310 (96x68, 65 thousand colors).

UFB (Ultra Fine and Bright) - Liquid crystal displays with increased brightness and contrast on a passive matrix. We can say that this is an intermediate option between CSTN and TFT. This type of display boasts lower power consumption compared to TFT. For the most part, such displays were used by Samsung in mid-range phones. This type of display is not widely used. Examples: Samsung C100 / 110 (128x128, 65 thousand colors).

TN is a type of TFT display matrix. Roughly speaking, TN is the simplest and cheapest TFT matrix. The viewing angles are the narrowest.
