    Making a soft headboard for a bed: interesting do-it-yourself ideas. Headboards for a bed (87 photos): ideas and spectacular options How to update a soft headboard with your own hands

    The headboard is an integral part of the bedroom furniture. It not only makes the furniture comfortable, but also plays an important role in the interior of the bedroom.

    You can always rely on this detail. After all, we all love to watch TV over a cup of tea before going to bed. It is much more comfortable to do this while sitting.

    To do this, you need a support, which serves as a headboard.

    It also protects the wall and wallpaper from rubbing, which will preserve the freshness and beauty of the finish.

    You can make a headboard with your own hands for:

    • soft;
    • curly;
    • in the technique of carriage screed;
    • from scraps;
    • pillows and more.

    Soft headboard for the bed

    Let's present to you the simplest option that any man can do. Even one that does not have skills in construction.

    In order to make a soft headboard in a rectangular shape, you need:

    • a rectangular piece of plywood (can be replaced with any shape, respectively, the head of the bed will be of a different shape);
    • dense fabric;
    • foam rubber;
    • synthetic winterizer;
    • construction stapler.

    You will spend a maximum of 3 hours on such beauty, and if you do it more than one, then even less.

    How to make a soft headboard for a bed

    We take a plywood sheet, preferably thicker, and put foam rubber on it in two layers.

    We take an unnecessary piece of fabric, put it on plywood and foam rubber so that it goes beyond their edges by about 15-20 centimeters, and fasten it with a stapler.

    On top of the fabric, we fasten a beautiful flap with a stapler that fits your home interior.

    As you can see, the method is quite simple and fast, so in a few hours you will transform your bedroom.

    Do-it-yourself figured headboard

    This headboard will also be soft, but differ in a special relief that will add chic and wealth.

    For him we need:

    • plywood sheet;
    • chalk or soap;
    • foam rubber;
    • stapler;
    • unnecessary material;
    • upholstery fabric;
    • furniture nails.

    Construction glue is better to choose a universal one that can easily glue fabric and foam rubber.

    We need chalk or soap to mark the fabric in order to cut an even piece.

    How to make a curly headboard

    You need to start with a sketch, according to which you will make your drawing and markup. It can be of any shape. Usually a light relief is made.

    If you have the necessary skills, you can cut flowers and other patterns, but this is quite a difficult task.

    We cut out our drawn blank from plywood, foam rubber and fabric. For starters, it’s worth trying on a paper blank so that it fits into a common room or another room.

    We do the same with the fabric.

    Raise the head of the bed horizontally and start stretching the fabric from the back with the staples.

    Make cuts on the fabric so that it can perfectly match the relief of the plywood headboard.

    Decorate the upholstery with furniture studs, fixing them 1 centimeter from the edge of the head of the bed.

    To make the second line of decorative decoration with carnations, mark with chalk, stepping back from the first line about 10 centimeters.

    Nail the carnations along the marked line.

    With an unnecessary piece of fabric, close the back side, securing it with a stapler.

    Attach the headboard to the bed or wall. You can also just put it on the floor near the edge of the bed, leaning against the wall.

    Quilted headboard in carriage tie technique

    Such a headboard will be soft and can be found quite often in many stores. This is considered a modern and interesting bed decoration.

    We need all the same materials:

    • plywood;
    • foam rubber;
    • stapler with staples;
    • air gun;
    • synthetic winterizer;
    • textile;
    • cord;
    • large buttons with a fabric surface.

    We take plywood and smear it with glue. Then we glue foam rubber to it, the thickness of which should be at least 5 centimeters.

    We put a large sheet of paper and draw holes for buttons on it. It is advisable to make them evenly around the entire perimeter.

    Cut holes in paper or cardboard.

    We apply the sheet to the foam rubber and circle the holes with a felt-tip pen.

    To transfer the holes to the foam rubber, you must use a drill with a nozzle.

    You can glue a synthetic winterizer onto the foam rubber by making exactly the same holes as we did on the foam rubber.

    If desired, you can do without a synthetic winterizer. Just with him the headboard will be softer.

    We stretch the upholstery and make holes with a drill to the very end, since we will pull the cords on the buttons through the entire layer.

    We stretch the cord through the buttons and thread them into the hole. For convenience, you can use any hook.

    We tighten the cords well so that the buttons fit snugly against the upholstery of the head of the bed. We fix the ropes with a stapler.

    Soft patchwork headboard

    If you do not want to spend money on a large piece of upholstery material, you can replace it with various shreds.

    It can be old jeans, dresses and any other clothes. Thus, this method will turn out to be very profitable and economical.

    We need:

    • 2 sheets of plywood;
    • saw;
    • scissors;
    • headboard filler (foam rubber or synthetic winterizer);
    • patches of fabric;
    • glue and adhesive tape;
    • stapler;
    • screwdriver;
    • self-tapping screws.

    How to make a upholstered headboard from scraps

    We draw a sheet of plywood into squares or rectangles. Next, we take a saw or a hacksaw and begin to cut out these shapes.

    We cut the foam rubber or synthetic winterizer into the same shapes, but from the fabric we cut out a flap a few centimeters larger.

    We glue each layer: plywood - foam rubber - fabric. The fabric should be stretched quite tightly so that wrinkles do not form. In the same way it can be done.

    Secure the fabric again with a stapler to secure.

    Thus, we make all the figures, creating elements of a soft headboard for a bed from patches.

    We lay out all the squares on the floor with the right side, forming the future headboard. Glue them together with adhesive tape.

    We take the second plywood and put it on our squares. Using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws, we fasten each pad to the plywood sheet.

    Choose the length of the self-tapping screw in advance so that it does not go through and spoil the head of the bed.

    All is ready! You can attach it to a bed or wall, or simply lean it next to it.

    DIY pillow bed headboard

    To do this, we need a lot of small pillows. It depends on their number, size and the desired size of the headboard.

    We take pillows, which can be of various colors or plain and sew one to the other at the corners.

    You can attach pillows to the wall with glue or nails. Glue in this case will be the best solution, since the nail can break through the pillow over time.

    So you ruin the headboard and can be injured. Another great way to attach pillows to a curtain rod.

    As a headboard for a bed, it can also come off. It's just as easy to make and looks great.

    A decorative fence can also be a great idea. This option will not appeal to everyone, but rather to those who like to hang things on the head of the bed.

    If you are not afraid of rigidity, then build a headboard from ordinary boards. Paint it or make inscriptions of your names, drawings and so on.

    If you can draw beautifully, then you are lucky. You can create a fairy tale in your room.

    Draw a fantastic headboard on the wall, wallpaper, or graphite board. An incredible impression will be created.

    We continue to fill the treasury of ideas on the topic of original solutions for the bedroom, namely, the unusual decoration of the head of the bed. Some time ago we posted fresh collections with different ways of decorating this very noticeable element of the bedroom. But from the last collection, we decided to share fresh ideas by type of creativity and result.

    Already out, and this selection is dedicated to three-dimensional structures - in all their diversity.

    What beds are they suitable for? First of all, for those modern models that do not require a factory headboard. But if your bed has it, it is likely that you will have a desire to update it or replace it with a new, unusual one. So by “structures” we mean a rigid element that is attached to the wall or to the bed itself, as well as the design of the wall around the headboard (shelves and niches).

    We divided all collected ideas into 6 parts, focusing on the style of the result. However, in each of them you will find completely different options, although there are still common features (shape, material or type of decoration).

    So, in this issue for creative natures and their crazy hands 6 fresh headboard themes:

    • romance of a French princess;
    • inspiration from the East;
    • strict classic options;
    • natural wood + country;
    • fantasy solutions;
    • restrained lines of modern urban style.

    Let creativity bring you pleasure, and the result will exceed expectations!

    __________________________

    headboard idea #1: a la French princess

    The main decoration of this type of headboard is monograms and floral motifs. They can appear in the form of a structure (like cut out of plywood) or be the result of your drawing (or decoupage) on the wood surface of an existing headboard.

    If you already have a French-style wrought-iron headboard, try to get creative with it, for example, decorate it with a romantic garland.

    __________________________

    headboard idea #2: East is a delicate matter

    When we think of the East, we most often mean either the Arab countries or the Far East. In all these cultures, such an original piece of furniture as a screen was known. It is she who can become the basis of a new headboard. But more on that later, but first, about Japan.

    Light trellises, shelves associated with pagodas, bamboo - all this will add a touch of trendy interior style to the bedroom. The first row of pictures in section-2 is just about this topic.

    And now back to the screen. The bedroom of an oriental beauty cannot be imagined without a screen; European aristocrats of the 18th century instantly appreciated the elegance and intimacy of this compact item. You can see many options in more detail in our screen galleries ( , ), and here we offer to see how this accessory becomes a plot for inspiration.

    For example, take as a basis the very essence of the screen (partial isolation) and make a “lattice” for the head of the bed. The opposite option is to get a real oriental little thing and attach it to the wall. A compromise solution is to create a simple analogue of a screen from improvised materials, fastening parts of the frame with furniture hinges.

    __________________________

    headboard idea number 3: the rigor of exquisite classics

    If we abstract from Rococo and Baroque, many will remember that the classics presuppose a certain severity and restraint of lines. In this section, we have collected several options for those who like it.

    Rigid structures of symmetrical shape - plywood and metal, as well as frames made of moldings on the bedside wall, evoking associations with old paintings.

    __________________________

    headboard idea #4: eco-friendly country

    These stories are likely to appeal to lovers of eco-friendly materials and simple but charming solutions. Wooden boards, old door panels or thin trellises imitating a fence - in a word, "life surrounded by nature and strong things a la a rural master."

    headboard idea #5: fantasy without limits

    And here are collected options that can be safely considered single. Some of these headboard designs can be created instantly, for example, as in photo-2 (from a set of small IKEA mirrors) or photo-5 (a regular straight MDF headboard is pasted over with a patchwork of multi-colored wallpapers that match in tone to each other.

    Other ideas will require a longer selection of materials, but the result will really look unique.

    Properly selected furniture can set a certain style for the whole room. In the bedroom, for example, the central object is the bed, or rather, its headboard. Color, texture, shape of the headboard determine the atmosphere and design of the bedroom. With the help of this detail alone, you can radically change the look of the room. But it is not always possible to buy a new headboard: firstly, because of the high price, and secondly, it is not easy to find a ready-made headboard that fits the room perfectly. But having certain skills and materials, you can make a headboard with your own hands.

    To begin with, we will determine what the headboard can be made of and what tools will be needed for this.

    Materials:

    • Wood (plywood, boards, slats, bars, depending on the chosen style);
    • Fabric (for the base, as well as outer upholstery);
    • Foam rubber or other soft filler;
    • Accessories (buttons, buttons, laces, hooks, etc.).

    • Electric jigsaw;
    • Construction stapler;
    • Screwdriver;
    • Self-tapping screws (or glue, depending on the manufacturing method);
    • Scissors.

    In order to make a back on the bed with your own hands, you need to have at least minimal skills in working with these tools.

    Wooden headboard for the bed

    The easiest and least expensive way to get an original do-it-yourself headboard is to make it out of wood. This option is suitable for those who are not afraid of rigidity.

    Of course, carved bed elements made of various types of real wood will be a very beautiful option. But making them yourself will only work if you have the skill of carving and a set of necessary tools. In addition, valuable wood species cost a lot of money.

    Therefore, a wooden headboard is easiest to make from plywood. The sheet can be cut into any shape, and then covered with paint, decorated with patterns, inscriptions or even backlighting. It is better to attach it to the bed frame so as not to spoil the wall covering. Such a do-it-yourself headboard can be replaced several times.

    When you come home from hard work, you want only one thing: to relax in the comfort of your bedroom on your favorite bed. It is she who is one of the most important places for us, you spend a third of your life on it, so she must be comfortable.

    The very first thing that catches your eye when you enter the bedroom is the bed. It should be comfortable and beautiful.

    But few people think about how to ensure this pleasure for themselves. If you are an exception to them, then this recipe for making a chic bed is for you. You can imagine an unimaginable number of ideas for decorating this center of the bedroom, or you can start with the simplest - finishing the bed. But how to sheathe a bed with your own hands?

    Of course, you can buy a finished bed in the store, but the range and price sometimes leave much to be desired. To resort to the services of manufacturing the desired model of a bed to order is not very profitable for our time and wallet. It remains to take this, only at first glance, a difficult and painstaking matter into your own hands.

    Tools and materials

    Choose a non-staining and wrinkle-resistant fabric for finishing the bed.

    For this process you will need:

    • foam rubber;
    • batting;
    • plywood or hardboard;
    • construction stapler, scissors;
    • any fabric for upholstery;
    • glue.

    The first thing to do is to choose the fabric for sheathing according to the size and shape of the chipboard. It should extend beyond the sheet by 20-40 cm. Thus, there will be a supply of fabric for fastening.

    The same must be done with foam rubber. It should be 8-13 cm larger than the bed frame, no matter what shape it will be - round or square. At the same time, decide in advance which edge of your bed is soft or hard? Depending on this, select the upholstery option.

    Workflow features

    First upholstery method

    Build a bed frame and hammer plywood onto it.

    On a pre-prepared bed frame, you need to stuff plywood or hardboard. At the same time, leave a distance at the top of 5-7 cm in order to fix the foam rubber. The foam rubber is stuffed on top of the plywood, while it is superimposed on the excess part of the plywood, which was left in excess. It cannot be nailed without creating a quilted effect, so use special glue.

    When you have finished stuffing the foam rubber, you need to stretch the fabric on top and nail it to the bottom with staples at the bottom of the frame. In the corners, you need to collect the fabric in 2 folds, which you put on top of each other and hammer with staples at the junction. You can not stuff the staples on top of each other, otherwise it will just be a waste of them. The more you use them, the better the fabric will hold up. Try to nail the staples as far away from the edge of the fabric as possible.

    Stretch the fabric over the foam rubber and secure with a stapler,

    Here you can also cut out excess fabric, just do not cut too much, because then arrows and other types of damage may appear on the surface of the fabric. Or the upholstery can simply fall off the frame.

    Never stretch the upholstery fabric too tightly: the seams should not be bent. If the pattern or thread strips lie flat and you can't pull the fold over the fabric, you can be sure that you did everything right. Make sure you choose the right fabric.

    For different upholstery methods, there are different fabrics to suit you. If you plan to place the mattress in a recess in the frame, which is suitable for a round bed, resort to this upholstery method.

    Second upholstery method

    Attach the foam rubber to the prepared plywood sheet with glue or a stapler.

    In the same way, as in the first case, the frame is upholstered first with plywood, and then with foam rubber. However, if your covering is not even on the sides, that is, cords and buttons will be used to create notches in the material, it is recommended to use batting. This will not create a gap at the top of the bed. Just wrap the frame in the same way, you can additionally apply more fabric at the bottom to hide the fastening points. You can nail plywood to the bottom. Thus, the frame is completely upholstered. We put the finished mattress on top and the process is over.

    The process of making recesses with buttons in the lining is not particularly complicated. You can draw foam rubber in advance, nail and thread threads through the fabric, which will subsequently stretch the fabric and buttons will be sewn on top. Or you can drive decorative nails into the places marked on the fabric and simply glue the buttons. They should be the same color as the upholstery, so you can create a quilted finish.

    It is best to choose materials from natural ingredients.

    Upholstery fabric should be selected depending on your preferences. You can upholster beds with velor, velvet, microfiber, jacquard, flock.

    If you have allergies, then sheathe the bed with natural materials, such as cotton or linen. The latter options can be used for the warm season as a removable upholstery. Cotton does not collect dust, and linen is a durable material. Upholstery colors may also vary depending on the season. In summer, light upholstery, in winter - dark. At the same time, they should be combined with curtains or decorative pillows, a bedspread.

    Before you start sheathing the bed, carefully look at the frame for cracks and chips.

    1. Before removing the old coating, be sure to inspect the frame for cracks or damage.
    2. In most cases, it is recommended to change both the packing material and the springs. It may have defects, or a lot of dust has formed there from time to time. It is best to additionally fix the new filler with muslin.
    3. Choose a fabric with a protective coating. Do not upholster it with pile fabrics or elastic materials. They stretch, and you are tormented to change the upholstery. Colored prints on fabric are not recommended. With home upholstery, minor defects will be noticeable.
    4. Make a removable cover or upholstery for the bed.

    Thus, it can be easily cleaned and changed in the off-season or for wear.

    If you want to make a cover that can later be removed, then you need to measure the frame in advance and create a pattern according to it. Then, from pieces of fabric, sew a cover to size. For the sides of the cover, it is better to use elastic bands.

    To make an upholstered bed beautiful for a long time, it is best to make upholstery in 2 layers.

    The first is non-removable, and the second is as a cover. Fixed upholstery is best made from high-strength fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen, satin, bamboo fabric. In this case, the outer upholstery should be in relation to the inner one so that there is no friction or static between them.

    There are a lot of major mistakes to avoid. If the frame wood is of poor quality, then cracks may occur on it, which will subsequently lead to tears of expensive fabric. Therefore, never sheathe a bed made of bad wood without an upholstery base with expensive fabric or leather. For removable upholstery, carefully choose a fabric that will not stretch. Therefore, it is very important to choose a high-quality fabric for covers. If you want to wash the upholstery, then make sure that the fabric is washed well and does not lose its color.

    If you want to further decorate your updated frame, make a headboard for it. In the same way, make upholstery, only for pieces of plywood folded in half, and attach it all to the bed or to the wall. And our perfect bed is ready. Thus, you can not buy a new bed, but simply update its upholstery. Having done all the work, you will look differently at your updated bed.

    The bed is the main subject of the bedroom. You can not only sleep on it, but also just relax or watch TV. The design of the bed and the room as a whole determines one of its main elements - its headboard.

    This short review will describe its main types and materials used for manufacturing, as well as instructions on how to make a headboard with your own hands at home.

    Types of headboards

    There are various materials for their manufacture. The headboard of the bed is made of wood. In order for the furniture to fit perfectly into the room, it is necessary to choose a method of processing and decorating wood. If the wooden surface is not decorated, then it is covered with paint or varnish.

    The decor can be made using different types of leather, textiles or using exotic materials in the form of mosaics or natural stone.

    In this case, the tree serves only as a basis for the product and does not perform an artistic function. Therefore, in this case, other similar materials, such as plywood or chipboard, can be used instead of wood.

    The headboard can be made of metal, that is, be forged. Such metal products are used using various artistic styles.

    Materials and tools used in finishing the headboards

    It is rather difficult to make a high-quality soft headboard, but it is quite feasible if you plan all operations in advance, select materials and tools.

    Before starting work, you will need to select a design project that is planned to be done. Now it is easy to find and pick up various photos of the head of the bed, which you can do with your own hands according to the design suitable for the interior of the room.

    For the manufacture of the backrest, a sheet of plywood with a thickness of about 1 centimeter is required as a rigid base. To give softness, you will need a sheet of foam rubber of the appropriate size and a thickness of at least 5 centimeters.

    To finish the headboard area, you will need a piece of fabric or leather. In addition, decorating elements will be required for decoration.

    To work, you will need the following tools: a drill, a hacksaw or an electric jigsaw, a furniture stapler with staples, a knife and scissors, and glue. To attach art elements, you will need a sewing kit and twine. A screwdriver and a hammer will not be superfluous.

    First of all, the frame of the headboard is prepared. If an existing frame is used, then it is freed from the existing decor. The most difficult stage of work is decorating the headboard with buttons or other similar artistic elements.

    If they are planned to be used, then boards with a thickness of about 1 centimeter are attached to the back side around the perimeter to create volume to hide the internal fasteners on the back surface.

    The necessary holes for the elements are also marked and drilled on the square. The location of the holes can be drawn manually, their location is determined by the desired pattern. It can be horizontal or diagonal, made using the same or different elements.

    Fastening of foam rubber and fabric is carried out using a construction stapler. First, the foam is attached. Instead of thick upholstery foam, you can use several layers of thinner material.

    The sides are covered with foam rubber with a bend of the material on the side surface for extra softness, the bottom and top can be covered flush with the edge without bending the foam rubber on the side surface. If the foam rubber is planned to be bent to the lower side surface, then it is necessary to check whether the design of the bed allows this.

    Fabric or leather is cut off with a margin on each side from 25 to 30 centimeters. The head of the bed is placed vertically leaning against the wall and covered with a piece of fabric. When attaching buttons and material, access to both sides of the headboard is required.

    For decoration, special buttons can be used, which can be covered with upholstered or other material. The button is wrapped in fabric, its edges at the back cover are smeared with glue, then, using a special plastic mold, the cover is carefully hammered. After the glue has dried, the button can be used.

    Sheathing the structure is the most time-consuming and responsible stage. Fastening of decorative buttons is carried out in a certain strict sequence. An ordinary button is rigidly tied or sewn to the two ends of an upholstery thread threaded through a thick needle.

    The thread is threaded from the back side into the hole in the frame and brought out. A decorative button is put on this thread from the outside, wrapped once with this thread and sunk a little in the foam rubber - this thread is brought out through the same hole back to the back side through an ordinary button.

    The double thread is cut off, and its ends are tied several times like shoelaces. In this case, you need to monitor the drowning of the decorative button in foam rubber. Decorative buttons are worn in rows from top to bottom.

    After attaching all the buttons, fabric or leather is attached around the perimeter. To do this, the headboard is placed face down on a clean floor. The fabric is attached with a slight tension with staples. Small neat bends are made from the corners. Excess pieces of fabric are cut off, and then the back of the headboard is carefully covered with a piece of material.

    After studying this review, you can understand how to make either a new headboard, or how to remake the head of the bed with your own hands, using new materials to update the interior. Since independent work does not require large expenses, such an update can be carried out regularly on its own. Each time the quality of work will increase.

    By improving your skills, you can help update the interior of your close relatives or friends. In any case, a self-made interior solution will bring a lot of pleasure.
