A few years ago, especially for PS 3, the Psyonix studio released an unusual football arcade game, where cars played as players, with a complex name - Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. But neither the unusual name, nor all the efforts of the developers helped to get positive reviews from the general public, although they won the hearts of several hundred fans.

Years later, the same studio Psyonix decides to release a sequel with a more adequate title. There is no trace of the special offer exclusively for PlayStation, because the list of platforms has been replenished with the most popular - PC. The successful release date and perky trailers did their job, and now the Rocket League, as the project is called, promises a lot of fun.

Rocket League is the same football simulator with cars. Two teams meet on the field, each can have up to four cars, and there is a big ball in the middle. The player's goal is to crash into this ball in order to drive it into the opponent's goal, the probability of which will be quite small. The rules, the roles of the players, the offsides remained in the real world, but in the game, according to the developers, they were not needed.

The entire field is surrounded by a net so that no one accidentally flew into the stands, because without it this would happen all the time. Football cars are much more mobile than ordinary cars, they can jump, change body position abruptly and accelerate with nitro. This mode runs on special energy that can be harvested in the field, but sometimes it can be tricky.

The control itself in the game is very simple. The camera is fixed on the ball, but you can also untie it from it if you wish. It is always easy to determine where to go and why to kick the ball. However, despite the intuitive controls, none of the players succeeds in achieving what they want the first time. It's better not to take the first hours of the game too seriously, but just relax and play a little fool.

Yes, steering is very easy here, but you still need to learn how to dribble. The merciless physics model in the game does not allow you to direct the football projectile at the right angle. That is why at first you try to just kick him towards the opponent's goal. And the voice chat at this time is bursting with emotions.

Fans of team games and building strategies can be seriously upset, because they will not meet either the first or the second here. From the start signal, all cars rush towards the cherished ball. And the results are not long in coming: accidents, explosions and small victories. Strange, but this method of play is considered by most to be the most effective. And they are seriously wrong.

After getting the first experience, you begin to understand this. After 5-10 hours of play, you notice advantageous positions, avoid uncomfortable ones, try to take the ball, jump and turn in the right direction when necessary. And the last thing you start to get used to is speed and distance.

The training regimen does little to get you started. The tasks are divided according to the style of play, from playing as the goalkeeper to attacking positions. The first assignments are very simple, but the last ones can make you torment your fulfillment, when you are given one blow for everything about everything.

But even after completing such modest training tasks, you begin to better understand the essence of the game and even acquire your own style. The system of creating matches divides the players according to the experience gained and the number of matches played, which allows experienced players to meet their peers, and little things spin around the ball in their "children's" field. In fact, the Rocket League holds great potential for developing skill in it. After all, then you no longer just rely on luck, but try to complete a successful jump, do a somersault, hit the ball in the right direction and, having landed on all four wheels, rush on to score the coveted goal.

You can immediately see the meaning in different lineups for the game. If the "4x4" mode is something crazy and chaotic, then doubles play will still make you play as a team. And going on the field one on one does not at all forgive wrong strikes, because there will be no extra time that appears during a mess.

With every goal scored, successful pass and some other little things, the player gets experience points, and with him there are opportunities to paint his car, buy a cool sticker, attach flags to antennas and other decorations. For a certain number of points, you can even purchase new models. In general, all cars have standard characteristics, but there is a difference between them, so it makes sense to choose the best option for yourself first, and then weigh it with all sorts of gadgets. The assortment, of course, is not so great, but it is enough to create your own unique football car.

Sometimes there are minor problems. Servers are turned off for "minutes of silence", and often go to maintenance without warning. In this case, you can try out the game mode with bots, tournaments and points.

What really surprised me was the ability to play with one device for up to four people. Even the opportunity is given to split into teams or, conversely, to unite to defeat online rivals. But it's not even worth trying to fight bots, they are very boring, and their actions do not resemble those of real people, and sometimes even completely contradict the laws of common sense.

Rocket League has a number of drawbacks: a small number of fields, lack of clear tasks, modifications and a storyline. But they all step aside, because in this project there is a lot of space for improving their skills. There are many subtleties hidden here, so that during the hours of play they can be revealed and then show an excellent game in multiplayer. The very same pleasure comes to the player with the first collision with the ball.
