    Compare iPhone X and iPhone XR: what to choose? What is the diagonal and screen size of the iPhone X in inches? Comparison of iphone screen sizes.

    A little more than a month is left before the main event of the year for Apple - the presentation of new 2018 iPhone models, of which there are already quite a few. Moreover, some video bloggers have already presented reviews of layouts (or prototypes, as the authors themselves call them) of the expected iPhone 9 and iPhone X Plus.

    Screen size and dimensions of the new iPhone 2018

    The most affordable model of 2018 release will have a slightly larger (compared to the iPhone X) screen diagonal - 6.1 inches, while the body of the gadget will become larger not only on the plane, but also in volume, having a slightly greater height, width and thickness. The most likely name for the smartphone is iPhone 9.

    iPhone X Plus (or iPhone 11 Plus) will be the largest in the Apple family with a hypotenuse of 6.5 inches. The dimensions of the device will be almost identical to the iPhone 8 Plus with a slight deviation towards increase.

    Main features of iPhone X Plus and iPhone 9

    The most notable feature of the iPhone 9 layout is the single camera. Naturally, it would not be difficult for Apple to equip the gadget with a dual module, which the manufacturer of Chinese non-names in the price segment up to $ 100 can now afford, but in this case, the line between flagship and mid-budget models would be too blurry.

    In addition, the iPhone 9 frame is made of anodized aluminum, while the iPhone X and iPhone X Plus use steel. On the one hand, aluminum allows the use of a wider palette of shades and reduces the weight of the device, on the other hand, steel ensures the reliability of the structure.

    The last important nuance is the down-shifted SIM card tray of the iPhone 9. The most daring assumption implies the presence of two SIM slots there at once (so far no one even dares to mention memory cards). The banal explanation is that such a design is necessary for mounting an LCD matrix (an OLED display is installed in the iPhone X).

    Minor differences

    In the video and screenshots, you can see that two new speaker holes have appeared on the bottom of the iPhone X Plus, which in theory could mean an improvement in sound. You can also notice that the body of the iPhone 9 and iPhone X Plus mockups are slightly lighter than Apple's usual colors, but in reality the palette may not change.

    Now we know absolutely everything about the iPhone XS vs iPhone Xs Max vs iPhone XR, it happened pretty quickly, let's compare them. Your options for next year boil down to one of these phones (although you can still buy an iPhone 8 and 8 Plus or an iPhone 7).

    All three new iPhones for 2018 have most of the same core features, but they differ in more than just price.

    iPhone XS vs XS Max vs XR: resolution and screen size in inches

    The most obvious difference between these phones is their displays.

    • iPhone XS - 5.8 inch 19.5:9. OLED aspect ratio, 2436 x 1125 pixels (458 ppi), 82.9% screen-to-body ratio.
    • iPhone Xs Max - 6.5 inch 19.5:9. OLED aspect ratio, 2688 X 1242 pixels (458 ppi), 84.4% screen-to-body ratio.

    The iPhone XS has the smallest screen area of the three smartphones, while the iPhone XS Max has a larger 6.5-inch screen. The iPhone XR uses the LCD screens of Apple's past and lacks the 3D touch feature that debuted on the iPhone 6S. Instead, it uses haptic feedback like a trackpad when you long press an icon on the display.

    • iPhone XR: 6.1 inch LCD display, 326ppi pixel density;
    • iPhone XS: 5.8-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display, 458ppi pixel density;
    • iPhone XS Max: 6.5-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display, 458ppi super retina pixel density.

    The smaller model weighs 177 grams and the larger 208 grams, making it the heaviest iPhone Apple is currently selling.

    However, apart from the size, the iPhone XS is almost identical to its big brother. Both phones have an OLED screen, the same pixel density, support for Dolby Vision and HDR10 (which makes them ideal for shooting video) and 3D Touch.

    On the other hand, both displays retain the iPhone X's infamous notch.

    iPhone XS vs XS Max vs XR: dimensions and weight in grams

    • iPhone XR: aluminum case with glass back;
    • iPhone XS: Stainless steel body with glass front and back;
    • iPhone Xs Max: Stainless steel body with glass front and back.

    If the size of the iPhone Xs Max display doesn't bother you, then you might be surprised by the size of the case:

    • iPhone XR – 75.7 x 150.9 x 8.3 mm (5.94 x 2.98 x 0.33 in) and 194 g (6.84 oz);

    • iPhone XS – 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm (5.65 x 2.79 x 0.30 in) and 177 g (6.24 oz);
    • iPhone XS Max – 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm (6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 inches) and 208g (7.34 ounces).

    Accordingly: length: 143.6 mm, width: 70.9 mm, thickness: 7.7 mm.

    Not all new iPhone screens are the same. Yes, the 5.8-inch iPhone Xs and 6.5-inch Xs Max both feature bright retina OLED panels, but the hit of the iPhone X is the 6.1-inch iPhone XR with an LCD panel that Apple called "Liquid Display."

    The iPhone XR's 6.1-inch screen measures a liquid LCD of 1,792 x 828 pixels, making it less sharp than the Super Retina screens in the 5.8-inch iPhone Xs (2,436 x 1,125 pixels) and 6.5-inch iPhone Xs Max (2,688 x 1,242 pixels).

    Yes, the iPhone Xs Max is a big phone, but it's not much heavier than the iPhone XS. In addition, it is almost identical in size and weight to the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus model: 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm (6.28 x 3.07 x 0.32 inches) and 202 g ( 7.13 oz.). In addition, both new models have improved IP68 water resistance (compared to IP67 in the iPhone X), which allows the phones to be submerged in water up to three meters instead of one.

    In other countries, Apple has integrated support for two SIM cards - one standard nano-SIM and a second eSIM, an all-digital alternative. With their help, you can combine work and home numbers or add a local SIM card while traveling - all in one device. In Asia, where dual-SIM technology is already popular but eSIM isn't, Apple will provide a variant of both new iPhones with dual physical SIM slots.

    The iPhone XS and Xs Max have louder external speakers than the iPhone X (25% louder than the iPhone 7) and stereo support. The stereo system may seem pointless on a phone, but Apple has worked hard to provide a genuine sense of separation between the left and right speaker.

    Finally, those who liked the stainless steel frame of the iPhone X will be happy to hear that it is being carried over to the iPhone XS and Xs Max. As well as more polarizing glass, it's important for wireless charging.

    Both the iPhone XS and Xs Max come in silver and gray just like their predecessor, while the gold has been carried over from the iPhone 8 range. Expect limited edition red in the future, a color already available for the iPhone XR at startup.

    iPhone XS vs XS Max vs XR: Cost in Russia

    Let's get straight to the point: The iPhone XS and Xs Max are the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever released.

    If you're thinking about Xs, get ready to shell out a ton of cash. The Xs (same as the X before it) costs $87,990 for the 64GB model, which still seems like a lot of money for a low-memory phone. (The 256GB model costs $100,990.) The XS Max is even more expensive, with a starting price of $103,990 for the 64GB version and $118,990 for the 256GB version.

    Both of these phones also offer a 512GB model that costs $400 more than their respective base models.

    • iPhone Xs Max: Gold, Silver, Grey.

    The iPhone XR starts at a more affordable (but not cheap) £65,990 for the 64GB model, and you'll spend £69,990 to bump it up to 128GB.

    • iPhone XR – 64GB (64,990 RUB or $749), 128GB (68,990 RUB or $799), 256GB (77,990 RUB or $869)
    • iPhone XS – 64 GB (87,990 RUB or $999), 256 GB (100,990 RUB or $1,149), 512 GB (118,990 RUB or $1,349)
    • iPhone XS Max - 64 GB (103,990 ₽ or $1,099), 256 GB (118,990 ₽ or $1,249), 512 GB (135,990 ₽ or $1,449)

    By comparison, the iPhone X topped out at $118,990 for 256GB, but the new 512GB option pushes the iPhone XS higher while the iPhone Xs Max is in a class of its own.

    More details in the store:

    Needless to say, for some users, 64GB of memory might have been enough, but I suspect the real tidbit would be 128GB. No doubt that's why Apple showed it off.

    iPhone XS vs XS Max vs XR: Which is better to buy?

    My advice to those who want to buy an iPhone XS or iPhone Xs Max but will buy an iPhone XR instead. Despite a few compromises, it delivers all the key features in the XS models.

    However, for those who can afford Apple's flagship models, the iPhone Xs Max is the more impressive of the two, seeing such a large display crammed into a body no bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus is dizzying. However, the huge display impacts battery life with disappointing numbers given its vastly increased battery capacity.

    For iPhone X owners, this is not enough to offer you updates. But if you have an older model and you've been saving a lot, I'd suggest the iPhone XS Max... although the choice is yours.

    iPhone XS vs XS Max vs XR: What do we end up with?

    In terms of their performance and cameras, the iPhone Xs, XS Max, and XR are more similar than their prices. The biggest difference, both in price and size, is where you pay pennies for the biggest iPhone.

    We look forward to testing each of the phones in our full reviews so we can find out what Retina displays really are and how high the A12 bionic processor sets the bar for each phone. Are you ready to pre-order one of these iPhones (Xs orders start September 14th and XR orders start October 19th)? If yes, then let us know in the comments below so we can sympathize with you about the high price.

    It looks great, especially in a light version (with a shiny silver edging), it lies great in the hand - just like a regular iPhone 6/6s/7/8.

    Smartphone Apple iPhone X

    We only note that in order to avoid cracks on the glass, it is better to wear a smartphone in a case - then it is unlikely to suffer if it falls. The case, by the way, hides the protrusion of the camera, but the elegance of the smartphone is also lost.

    Screen

    To be honest, the iPhone X screen is the detail that disappointed us the most in the device. Firstly, we have already said that it is made using OLED technology, and uses a “checkerboard” placement of PenTile subpixels. On the one hand, yes, the screen still has better color reproduction than many Samsung flagships (which, recall, produces these screens for Apple), on the other hand, it's still not IPS, which is the same.

    Compare screen width between iPhone X (bottom) and iPhone 8 Plus

    Secondly, let me down and the size itself. We expected that we would get a larger screen than the 8 Plus in a smaller package. In fact, it turned out that the screen of the iPhone 8 Plus is still ... larger than that of the iPhone X!

    Look, the diagonal of the iPhone X is 5.8 inches, and the 8 Plus is 5.5 inches. However, it has a different aspect ratio - 19.5:9 instead of 16:9. It turns out that the screen width of the iPhone X is 61.7 mm, and the iPhone 8 Plus is 68.5 mm.

    But in optimized applications, more information is placed vertically

    If we calculate the area, then for the iPhone X it is 82.6 cm2, and for the iPhone 8 Plus - 83.4 cm2. At the same time, this is only the estimated screen area, the iPhone 8 Plus has such a real area, and the iPhone X part of the screen is covered with rounded cutouts in the corners and a strip on top.

    It turns out that the iPhone X is more of an extension of the user experience of the iPhone 8, the usual one. And in the hand, the ten feels like a regular eight. We already wrote that the iPhone 8 in this generation turned out to be a little useless in general - it does not have a dual camera, and, as a result, also portrait mode.

    If the application is not optimized for iPhone X, then its usable area is even smaller in height than on iPhone 8 Plus

    Again, if the application does not use the entire screen area of the iPhone X, then even less is obtained.

    Home screen on iPhone X cannot be rotated "to the side"

    By the way, the function of rotating the image by 90 degrees on the main screen (as in the iPhone 8 Plus) is missing here.

    Modern Combat 5 on iPhone X

    We add that the same game developers still don’t really know what to do with the cutouts on the iPhone X screen. For example, in the screenshot above you can see that the pause button is slightly cut off with a rounded corner, and the black screen insert blocks the view. At the same time, the fact that the game is running in full screen indicates that it has been optimized for the iPhone X.

    Gestures

    The removed Home button had to be replaced with something. We have already said that the iPhone X is not the first smartphone without buttons (it was probably the first), so some solutions have already been tested, but in the case of the iPhone, it was necessary to offer an adequate replacement for all standard and familiar gestures, which is a little more complicated.

    In general, the adaptation turned out to be successful, with the exception of a few points.

    The first is to call the multitasking manager and close applications. Previously, we double-clicked the Home button, but now we need to swipe up from the bottom and hold our finger roughly in the middle of the screen. Moreover, if earlier we closed applications simply by swiping them up, now after opening the multitasking manager, you need to press your finger on the application list again and hold it until red icons appear in the upper left corners of the application preview. It's kind of like deleting apps from the desktop.

    Control Panel on iPhone X

    The second is to call the control panel. Previously, we called it with a swipe from the bottom up, but now this gesture returns from the application to the main screen (that is, it replaces the Home button). To call the control panel, you now need to swipe down from the top edge of the screen, moreover, from the right side, since performing this gesture to the left will open the Today screen and the list of notifications (if any) - like in Android. By the way, the battery percentage can now only be viewed in the control panel.

    The third is the Reachability function, when the image on the display seems to slide down to facilitate access to the upper elements. On other iPhones, we've double-tapped (tapped) the Home button (without pressing!), now we need to swipe from the bottom edge of the screen, just above the edge, down. This, in our opinion, is the most uncomfortable gesture for many reasons.

    Firstly, it is difficult to find the border from which the gesture works. If you see a horizontal bar at the bottom that appears in applications, then the reference is this bar. You kind of need to pull it down from the edge of the display. However, there is no strip on the main screen and you have to aim at the center of the dock with four application shortcuts.

    Reachability on iPhone X

    Secondly, it is not very convenient that the thumb (if you work with a smartphone with one hand) needs to be strongly bent down. The irony is that this action is required precisely if you want to reach as high as possible with the same finger. Of course, the descent of the image down is again cleverly calculated so that you can reach any icons without any problems, but the principle itself - pull your finger down to then reach the very top - causes some kind of internal contradiction in us. It's definitely not the Apple way.

    face ID

    If the screen disappointed us the most in the iPhone X, then Face ID, on the contrary, impressed us the most. It is useless to compare Face ID with attempts to unlock the face earlier - these are not only different technologies, but also a fundamentally different result. All these ideas from Samsung, ZTE and other companies worked poorly, only in good light, and required taking off glasses, taking off a hat, shaving - and so on, which ultimately made the function completely unusable for real use.

    Face ID is fast, always and under any conditions. Even in total darkness. Even if you put on a hat and glasses, do not shave for two weeks, she will still recognize the user, moreover, almost instantly.

    At first, however, we had problems with Apple Pay - we just did not quite understand how it works. In fact, it turned out like this - first you need to unlock the smartphone (Face ID), then press the power button twice to activate Apple Pay, after which, before bringing the smartphone to the terminal, you need to look at it again and make sure that the smartphone recognizes us. And now you can apply to the terminal. In fact, it takes a second or two at most.

    Not all terminals are located at such a level that it was possible to unlock and apply the phone at the same time, as in the case of Touch ID. Nevertheless, Face ID is more convenient in any case - it always works, it does not require any special actions (remove gloves, wipe a button, wipe a finger, etc.). In short, when we figured out the sequence of actions, the problems stopped. Although, Apple Watch is still the most convenient payment method.

    On the left - the smartphone is locked, on the right - Face ID recognized the owner

    But most of all, we liked Face ID in another scenario. When your phone is locked, various notifications come to it, the text of which is not displayed (if you activate the screen). But if you take the iPhone X and look at it, then their text is instantly revealed. You can not even unlock the smartphone, remove it - and they will hide again.

    It's incredibly comfortable and natural. After all, in order to read the message, you just need to look at the smartphone, all other actions, in fact, are superfluous.

    Performance

    Now we can finally compare the performance of all the latest iPhones in one table.

    iPhone X iPhone 8 iPhone 8 Plus
    Geekbench 4 4224/10290 4184/9933 4259/10418

    3D Mark Ice Storm Unlimited 62189 61 532 63 109

    Today, thanks to TENAA documents, the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus smartphones received smaller batteries compared to their predecessors. We do not yet know what capacity the battery is installed in the iPhone X, but we can tell another, no less interesting fact. It turns out that the 5.8-inch display on the anniversary iPhone X is actually "smaller" than the 5.5-inch screen on the iPhone 8 Plus. This paradox is due to differences in displays.

    As you know, with the release of the new iPhone X smartphone, Apple has joined many other manufacturers who have already managed to transfer their flagships to the so-called “frameless” design by marketers. The device received an unusually shaped display with thin bezels and a cutout for the TrueDepth camera system and other sensors. At the same time, the screen of the iPhone X turned out to be more elongated in height and is characterized by a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels, which corresponds to an aspect ratio of 2.17:1. At the same time, the iPhone 8 Plus model is equipped with a "regular" screen without any cutouts with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Actually, this difference leads to an unexpected result when calculating the effective screen area.

    Apple uses dots as an absolute reference, so let's follow suit and not delve into the nuances associated with differences in resolution, since this is a completely different topic. We are also interested in a purely "clean" screen size.

    So, 2436x1125 pixels corresponds to 812x375 pixels (3x magnification factor) in case of iPhone X and 736x414 pixels in case of iPhone 8 Plus (2208x1242 pixels).

    To start with, you can use a simplified model and calculate the effective screen area, ignoring the large notch and curved edges of the iPhone X display. For a more complete picture, you can also calculate the screen area for the iPhone 8. The iPhone X screen area is approximately 375 * 812 = 304500 pixels , while the exact area of iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8 is 304704 (414 * 736) dots and 250125 (375 * 667) dots, respectively. And without subtracting the cutout area from the iPhone X result, you can see that the iPhone 8 Plus has a large display area.

    To find out how much more specifically, there are a few more mathematical calculations to be done. More specifically, it is necessary to calculate the exact area of the cutout and the exact area of the corners of the screen. Fortunately, knowing the radii of the curves, it is possible to do this. The source cites images of smartphone screens with all sizes and calculations, there is no point in reprinting them. Note that after subtracting the extra zones and adding the area of the corners, the net area of \u200b\u200bthe iPhone X came out equal to 296724 points. Thus, the screen area of the iPhone X is 97.38% of the area of the iPhone 8 Plus. In other words, the iPhone X screen is 2.6% smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus screen. The image below shows the iPhone X display on top of the iPhone 8 Plus screen to see the difference.
