    Today I will tell you how to make a refrigerator for moonshine with your own hands. Finally, I sat down to write this article. He promised everything, promised to write it, but constantly put it off. And yet, I did it.

    Most of the article is devoted to the straight-through refrigerator, because I use it and I think it is more progressive or something. Why? Read below. I will also tell you about how to make a coil for a moonshine still, but more briefly.

    Varieties of refrigerators

    In total, there are two types of refrigerators for moonshine - direct-flow and coil. No, of course, our hobby with you implies a vast field for creativity, and for sure craftsmen have already made a great many refrigerators of various designs and shapes.

    But we will consider only the classic options.

    So, a direct-flow refrigerator is a straight tube made of copper or stainless steel, on which a casing is put on top (for example, another pipe). Moonshine goes through the inner tube, and coolant (water) goes through the outer tube. The scheme of such a refrigerator is shown below.

    The coil is the same tube, only twisted into a spiral, which is placed in a housing with cooling water. Coil circuit:

    Yes, I almost forgot. There is also a glass refrigerator, which can be bought in stores for laboratory equipment. But I do not recommend using it, because. this very fragile device tends to break at any good opportunity.

    This is especially dangerous during distillation, because the vapors and condensate of moonshine are flammable substances!

    Which is better, a coil or a straight-through

    As I said at the beginning of the article, I use a direct-flow refrigerator. I can highlight the following advantages:

    1. It does not form condensate plugs, which lead to pressure fluctuations in the distillation cube. Pressure drops lead to a sharp boiling of the mash and its release into the refrigerator (splash entrainment). When using a coil, this phenomenon occurs quite often, but in a straight-through it is excluded.
    2. In a direct-flow refrigerator, it is easy to regulate the temperature of the selection of moonshine. It instantly responds to changes in the water supply. In the coil, the reaction is very slow.
    3. Its efficiency is higher. Consequently, water consumption and costs are lower.

    Of the advantages of the coil, I can only name:

    1. More compact dimensions (not always).
    2. With a certain design, running water can be dispensed with.

    Direct-flow refrigerator manufacturing instructions

    I considered many different designs and settled on the option of a polypropylene pipe and fittings. This is one of the cheapest materials that you can buy at almost any plumbing store or hardware store.

    My total costs amounted to 678 rubles in one case (option No. 1) and 610 rubles in the other (option No. 2).

    The very idea of ​​using a polypropylene pipe does not belong to me, but I came up with the design and technological solutions proposed here and have already repeatedly tested it. I offer two options for execution, which are easy to do yourself.

    For manufacturing, we do not need special tools, and all the work will take no more than an hour.

    Update from 14.09.16. After about 10 distillations, the straight-through began to skip in one place. Apparently the glue dried up and a gap appeared. As a result, I filled all the cracks with sealant for the aquarium, which remained after manufacture moonshine from a pressure cooker. Several times already successfully tested in combat conditions.

    The finalization of the design of the cooler was proposed by a blog reader Evgeny. Below is its text:

    I assembled mine from a stainless tube with a diameter of 10mm and a wall thickness of 1mm.

    The problem for me was the sealing of the end exits. None of the investigated sealants work with the polypropylene from which the refrigerator jacket is made. It took literally 1-1.5 times.

    Then I bought a stainless steel collet with a ½ male thread and a socket with a ½ female thread. And it's been over a year now with nothing!

    I also wanted to say that when using a tube with an outer diameter of 10 mm and a PVC pipe as a shirt with a diameter of 20 mm, a cork can result in the passage of water in the places where the pipe and tees are soldered.

    When soldering these elements on the inside, a kind of influx is obtained, which tightly fits the tube and prevents the passage of water. At least that's what happened in my first fridge. I had to take PVC pipes and stuff with a diameter of 25mm.

    Option number 2

    This option differs in that I used a copper pipe with a diameter of 10 mm and a polypropylene pipe with a diameter of 20 mm. In this case, transitional couplings are excluded from the design, and the plugs are inserted directly into the tees. Photo below:

    Due to this and the smaller diameters of the tubes, the straight-through is a little cheaper and lighter, but its throughput is also reduced. See the next section for recommendations on steam wand size and other sizes.

    1. I came to the conclusion that the following dimensions are the most optimal - the length of the water jacket (casing) is 50-60 cm, the one-sided gap between the tubes is 1-1.5 mm. In my first variant, such a ratio is not maintained, but then I have not yet drawn definite conclusions.
    2. When selecting, pay attention to the wall thickness of the polypropylene pipe in order to withstand the required clearance. For example, a pipe Ø20 mm has a wall of 3.4 mm and an inner diameter of 13.2 mm. And for Ø25 mm, the wall is 4.2 mm and the inner Ø16.6 mm.
    3. The thinner the wall of the copper pipe, the better the heat is removed from the steam. It is better to use tubes with a wall thickness of no more than 1 mm.
    4. Cooling water must move towards the steam, so its supply must be connected on the opposite side from the steam inlet. As shown in the diagram at the beginning of the article.
    5. The normal operating position of a once-through refrigerator is a vertical position, in which the condensed moonshine flows freely down. This ensures its maximum efficiency and eliminates the formation of condensate plugs.
    6. The copper tube after each distillation must be cleaned with a brush. Or at least rinse with hot water. Otherwise, poisonous copper sulfate is formed.

    Instructions for making a coil

    The main stages in the manufacture of the coil are as follows:

    1. A tube made of copper or stainless steel with a diameter of 10-12 mm is taken. Length from 1.2 to 1.5 meters. Wall thickness 0.8-1.0 mm. Less than 0.8 is easy to damage during manufacture. More than 1 mm is very difficult to bend and their thermal conductivity also deteriorates.

    Copper tubes in stores are sold annealed and not annealed. An unannealed tube cannot be bent, so it does not suit us.

    Today in the stores of our country there is a large list of moonshine stills. As we well know, they all differ in cost, material from which they are made, dimensions. In addition, distillation systems are classified according to the principle of operation of the refrigerator. Many beginners do not attach much importance to this classification, since they believe that there are only two types of distillers on the market - with a direct-flow or reverse-type refrigerator.

    Such an opinion can be considered correct, but only on condition that we are talking about the principle of operation of the cooling element. If we consider refrigerators, based on their design features, we can see that there are much more varieties of coolers. They are divided into:

    • air coolers;
    • ball air chambers;
    • Liebig chambers;
    • ball coolers.

    The air cooler is one of the simplest in its design. It consists of a long glass tube to which distillation hoses are attached. A device of this type is used only when working with liquids boiling at a temperature of more than 150 ˚C and can perform the function of not only a direct-flow, but also a reverse cooler. True, it is more correct to use it as a direct cooling element, since in this case it works much more efficiently. These cooling chambers perform best when working with substances whose boiling point exceeds 160 ˚C.

    Ball air chambers are best used as a recooler. They are characterized by large heat exchange areas, which is why they have high performance indicators. Ball-type air coolers have been successfully used to condense liquids with a low boiling point.

    The third type of refrigerators are the Liebig chambers. These elements are successfully used both as a direct-flow and as a return cooling element. The design of such a chamber consists of a single glass or copper tube. The part is attached to the apparatus with self-tapping screws or by soldering. The refrigerant in the design is water circulating in the refrigerator body over the inner tube. At this time, there is steam of moonshine inside it.

    The last variety is ball-type coolers. They are used only as a reflux condenser. Due to the presence of spherical expansions in the steam flow, turbulence is created, which positively affects the quality of cooling. The refrigerant supply in this design is carried out from the bottom up. Due to its design, the ball cooler allows you to introduce additional substances directly into the chamber where the moonshine steam is located.

    As we can see, there are a lot of types of coolers. Some of them are used exclusively in the production of chemicals - these include ball and ball air chambers. Others, such as the Liebig chambers, have been successfully used in household moonshine stills. In such cases, the best solution would be to use the device as a once-through cooler. What are the pros and cons of a device with this principle of operation, and what are its advantages over reverse-type coolers - we will consider in more detail.

    A distiller with a direct cooler has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the ease of making a refrigerator with your own hands. For work, you do not need to buy additional materials or tools. The second important advantage is the ease of use of the device at home.

    In addition, a direct-flow refrigerator is very easy to maintain - for preventive or overhaul repairs of the device, you do not need to carry the moonshine still for repair. A moonshine still with a refrigerator of this type is very easy and convenient to store.

    Among the advantages of a once-through cooler, it is also worth noting the ease of transportation. Due to the simple design and the absence of fragile parts, the device is not afraid of strong impacts. As a rule, direct-type cooling elements are made of stainless steel or copper, less often glass. This gives an absolute guarantee that the device will not be affected by chemicals in moonshine.

    Among the obvious disadvantages of a direct refrigerator, one can single out the inability to improve the design. So, reverse-type refrigerators have a more complex design, in which there are additional elements for fixing. With their help, you can attach other devices to the device that will help make moonshine of a higher quality cleaning. Additional modules also help to produce homemade whiskey or cognac, as well as medicinal, popular among our compatriots.

    Even a beginner in moonshining knows well that not a single distiller can do without high-quality cooling. Making this part of the moonshine with your own hands should be taken very carefully, since not only the temperature of the finished moonshine, but also the performance of the entire apparatus depends on the result of your work.

    The first important nuance of a direct-flow refrigerator is the need for the refrigerant to flow towards the steam flow entering the tube. After that, the recycled water is immediately replaced by a new liquid, which is why a device of this type, in fact, is called once-through. Having understood these simple principles, you can start making a refrigerator with your own hands.

    Refrigerating chamber of direct-flow type

    To begin with, we take a PVC tube with a diameter of no more than 4 cm. It can be purchased at any plumbing store. The length of the product should not exceed 30 cm. Otherwise, the moonshine unit will be quite problematic to transport even disassembled. In addition to the pipe, we will also need several plugs and couplings. Do not forget to stock up on bellows eyeliner, which will play the role of a core. We fasten the eyeliner to the plugs, after which we insert our fittings into the casing. Next, we place the device in a tin can, which will serve as the body of the refrigerator.

    The next step will be the installation of the refrigerator directly into the distiller. To do this, you can use different installation methods. The main thing is that this element of the apparatus is removable and allows you to apply a sufficient amount of sealant. As a rule, mounting with a nut thread is considered the best option. After installing the refrigerator, we generously lubricate its joints with a sealing compound and begin the test. To do this, on one side of the tube we connect a hose for supplying liquid, and put the second part on the outlet of the recycled refrigerant.

    When testing the device with a cooler for the first time, it is strongly not recommended to turn on the maximum water pressure. It is best to open the fluid supply to 30% of the maximum allowable. Next, we carefully monitor the integrity of the structure. If you find a leak, turn off the water and fix the problem. Once you have achieved the ideal operation of the refrigerator and the entire moonshine still, pour cold water into the distillation cube and start distilling. Thus, we will completely clean the system and finally make sure that it is working.

    Which is better: a coil or a straight-through?

    Coolers for moonshine stills, despite their similarity in principle of operation, have differences in characteristics. It is worth highlighting the advantages of each design separately.

    The direct-flow refrigerator has a high efficiency. This reduces the consumption of water consumed for cooling. Adjusting the temperature in it is easier than in the coil, since the response is much faster. The main advantage of the once-through cooler is that the vapor passage tube is wide enough to avoid plugging. Because of them, there are pressure surges in the distillation cube, provoking a sharp boil of the mash and a violation of the process technology.

    In addition to the once-through cooler, you can make a home-made cooling coil. The surface area of ​​its inner tube is higher than that of the forward flow due to the helical design. Due to this, the cooling of the steam occurs faster. The dimensions of such a device are more compact, and it is easier to install.

    It is impossible to say for sure which of the refrigerators is better. Each has its pros and cons. Moonshiners select the design according to their characteristics of the apparatus. The choice is influenced by the power, the volume of the drink and the tasks assigned to the device.

    How to make a direct-flow refrigerator for moonshine

    A direct-flow refrigerator for a moonshine still is quite simple to make with your own hands. At the same time, the cost of parts does not exceed a thousand rubles. The inner part of the shell-and-tube refrigerator is made of copper, and the outer part of the sewer pipe. The main components of the design:

    • Copper and polypropylene tube of different diameters - 1 meter each.
    • Tee - 2 pieces.
    • Coupling with a plug - 2 pieces each.
    • Fittings - 2 pieces.
    • FUM tape for bonding strength.

    The outer and inner tubes are selected in such a diameter that there is a gap of about 1.5 - 2 millimeters between them. It is in it that cold water will flow. From a polypropylene tube, it is necessary to cut off a piece about 60 centimeters long. It will become the outer casing of the entire structure. Tees are put on the ends. The best connection method is soldering. It is more simple and reliable, but requires a soldering iron. In its absence, heating can be applied. The tees are held for 3-4 minutes in boiling water and immediately put on the ends of the tube. With this method, there is a chance of getting burned, so you need to be extremely careful.

    When the tees are installed, reducers are put on. The connection is carried out by soldering or by the method indicated above. In this case, only one edge of the structure will have to be lowered into the pan, and the other should be constantly held. After that, a hole of such a diameter is drilled in the plugs so that a copper tube passes into it. It is important that it is located very tightly, without wide gaps. Plugs with holes are driven into the couplings, and fittings are inserted into the free holes of the tees. The threaded connection is sealed with FUM tape.

    It remains to install the core. To do this, it is necessary to measure and saw off the copper tube so that it protrudes 2 to 3 centimeters from each edge of the casing. The resulting segment is inserted through the holes of the plugs. The last stage is the sealing of the connection between the tube and the body. To do this, you can use silicone sealant or universal glue. After the joint dries, the structure is considered finished. A rubber tube is used to connect the refrigerator to the distillation cube. The connection depends on the direction of water flow in the casing. Liquid and vapor must move towards each other.

    It is possible to make a structure without using transitional couplings. In this case, it is necessary to take a copper and polypropylene tube of smaller diameters than in the previous version. Then the plugs are driven directly into the tees, and the connection of the copper tube with the casing is also carried out with a sealant.

    How to make a coil for a moonshine still

    A coil for a moonshine still, as well as a straight-through, can be made with your own hands. Unlike the first design, its design is a little more difficult for home-made due to the fact that the copper tube will need to be bent into a spiral.

    What to make a coil for moonshine? For its manufacture you will need:

    • Copper annealed tube - 1.5 meters.
    • Mandrel for winding a spiral - 1 piece.
    • Fine sand
    • Case (bucket or bottle) - 1 piece.

    The first stage is the choice of the diameter of the tube and the length of the coil for the moonshine still. From a segment of 120 - 150 centimeters, a fairly compact and powerful refrigerator is obtained. The core diameter is taken to be about 10 millimeters. Another important parameter is the wall thickness of the tube. This criterion fluctuates around 0.8 - 1 millimeter. If you take a tube with a wall thickness less than specified, then there is a high chance of damaging it when bending. If you exceed the value, then it will be difficult to bend the spiral.

    The selected tube must be tightly plugged at one end and filled with sand. It falls asleep very tightly, periodically tapping for even distribution. The other end of the filled tube is also sealed with a cork. Thanks to this, the tube does not flatten when winding on the mandrel. An alternative to sand as a filler can be soda. The main thing is to compact it as tightly as possible.

    After that, you need to choose the basis for bending the spiral. The diameter of the mandrel must be greater than the diameter of the tube and depends on the intended size of the structure. For these purposes, a pipe 35 millimeters in diameter is suitable, which must be clamped in a vice. A copper tube is wound onto the prepared mandrel, through which alcohol vapor will flow. Between the turns it is necessary to leave a small step of 6 - 7 millimeters. To do this, you can wind the wire next to the tube. The beginning and end of the coil is best left long. The excess will then be cut off.

    The curved tube is opened and freed from sand and installed in the housing. To do this, holes are made in the bottle for the inlet and outlet of the coil, as well as for the circulation of water, if it is provided. If desired, you can make a body structure from a plastic pipe used in plumbing, and if you have skills, from metal.

    To do this, you need to make 4 holes. 2 of them, one at the top and bottom for the coil, which is located vertically in a cylindrical casing, and 2 in the side part for supplying and discharging water. The spiral structure is assembled, cooling pipes are inserted, and all connections are sealed and soldered. Such a cooler is installed on the distillation cube in the same way as the direct-flow one, using rubber tubes.

    Often, stainless steel is used to make coils. It is quite durable and does not react. Aluminum and glass are less commonly used. The first material has a low service life, and the second is not suitable for home production. In any case, the choice is yours, and watching the video will help make it.

    Moonshine, for sure, is driven by at least half of Russian families. Even if they are not keen on the process, at least once they tried to make their own high-grade product, which compares favorably with the store-bought one and costs several times cheaper.

    Let's take a closer look at how to make a shell-and-tube refrigerator with a polypropylene pipe as a body.

    You will need plumbing items:

    • two-meter pipe with an inner diameter of 70 mm. This calculation is very important, since there will still be a coil inside, and the amount of water flowing should provide effective cooling;
    • 2 suitable plugs made of polypropylene;
    • 1 coupling suitable for the plug;
    • 1 connecting element, which tapers towards the end, with a sleeve;
    • 2 cable glands PG-29;
    • 2 suitable fittings;
    • about 2 meters of tube. Suitable corrugated stainless or copper.

    You will also need a drill or screwdriver, drill bits, strong glue and silicone sealant.

    Assembly

    1. First you need to take the plugs, mark 2 holes each so that after installing the fitting and gland nuts in each of the plugs, with which you will fix them, do not interfere with each other.
    2. Drill holes.
    3. In one of the glands, stretch the tube (future coil) almost to the end. Tighten the fixing ring.
    4. Fix in each plug a fitting and an oil seal (including with a tube), be sure to put it on the sealant.
    5. We form a coil by winding the tube around a suitable rounded object.
    6. We pass the end of the coil through the coupling.
    7. We articulate the outer casing (pipe) with the coupling and the second element and put it on the coil.
    8. We install plugs on the glue and seal the joints.

    Note. If you use a copper tube for the coil, first you need to fill it with sand and plug it on both sides (flatten it, insert wood plugs), otherwise, during the winding process, the inner walls of the tube may come into contact and such a coil will have to be rejected.

    After winding, the sand is poured out, the tube is washed with water.

    After that, the direct-flow refrigerator for the moonshine is ready. In terms of its functionality, it is completely not inferior to those made in the factory. But the cost price can please you.

    Upon completion of all work (including sealing), it is imperative that before putting the cooler into operation, check it for leaks by passing a certain amount of water through it.

    Making a dimroth cooler

    If you want to buy a dimroth refrigerator, then most often it will be made of glass.

    The device is really effective, but fragile, because this is a glass refrigerator, even if it is made of tempered glass. Inadvertently knocked, dropped, and that's all ... But it is quite possible to create a home-made, for example - stainless steel.

    Why this material? Firstly, food grade stainless steel is inert to various oils, acids and other impurities found in the mash. Secondly, it is reliable and quite easy to handle.

    In order to make a reverse refrigerator, you will need:

    • about 2.5 meters of stainless steel tube 6 mm in diameter;
    • pipe and covers for the body - 70 cm in diameter, about 1.9 meters high:
    • 2 tubes for connecting water and 1 for atmospheric communication;
    • soldering iron and solder.

    When winding the tube, it is important to consider that it two-layer, consists of an inner and outer layer. There are 14 turns in the inner layer, with a gap between them of 2 mm, while its inner diameter should be 20 mm. In the inner layer - 8 turns, and the gap between them - 6 mm.

    There should be a 3 mm gap between the inner and outer coils for free cooling. The total outer thickness of the coiled tube is 50 mm. The height of the system is approximately 115 mm.

    Using the dimroth cooler, you will no longer get a distillate, but a rectified one - almost completely devoid of harmful impurities and taste of the components included in the mash.
