Exactly 20 years ago, on February 27, 1997, an embryologist and geneticist from the Roslin Institute (Great Britain) Ian Wilmat published an article in the journal Nature in which he spoke about a successful experiment in cloning a sheep, which later gained worldwide fame under the name Dolly. She became the first mammal raised by cloning. Dolly lived 6 years and died on February 14, 2003 from progressive lung disease caused by a retrovirus.

Today we will tell you about the most interesting experiments of geneticists to create well-known animals with altered qualities.

Enviropig - an environmentally friendly pig

It is also called "Frankenswin", but the name is not entirely fair: the animal is not at all monstrous, but very cute. This is a genetic modification of the traditional Yorkshire pig breed made by scientists at the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) in 2001.

The fact is that pig breeding has a very bad effect on the environment, especially on water bodies. Pigs physiologically need phosphorus supplements, and by excreting it with manure that flows into rivers and lakes, they contribute to the death of organisms inhabiting the aquatic environment.

Canadian scientists have created a special transgenic construct that combines the mouse gene with the gene of Escherichia coli. By introducing it into a fertilized pig's cage, they bred an animal that possesses an enzyme that can break down phytic acid contained in regular feed. Acid is a phosphorus compound, but it is not normally broken down in pigs. Enviropig, having this ability, does not need expensive dietary supplements, and besides, it is environmentally friendly.

Unfortunately, the project stalled due to lack of funding. Nevertheless, the genetic material is frozen and, perhaps, will wait in the wings.

    Silkworm goat

Silkworm spiders produce incredibly valuable fiber, strong and resilient, that can be used to make a variety of things, from parachute ropes to surgical threads and even artificial ligaments! But how do you get this fiber in sufficient quantities? Spider farms did not justify themselves: each of the spiders guarded their territory, and they quickly killed each other.

Specialists of the biotechnology company Nexia Biotechnology came up with an ingenious way to achieve this goal, and their idea was taken up by scientists at the University of Utah (USA).

The “method” by which spiders produce silk is known to be similar to how female mammals produce milk. The experimenters inserted the spider gene coding for silk thread production into the goat's DNA. During lactation, silk proteins are produced in milk, which are filtered in the laboratory - a process similar to the production of cottage cheese.

However, there is a limitation: the strength of milk silk is only 30% of the strength of the fiber produced by the silkworm.

Whether "milk silk" finds wide application in industry - time will tell. By the way, the silkworm has to compete with genetically modified organisms from parallel projects. In the role of silkworms, scientists also try worms and bacteria.

    Fast growing salmon

But this GMO innovation, unlike the previous ones, has firmly entered life, because for the first time in history, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a permit for the sale of food products from a genetically modified animal, namely salmon. It happened in November 2015.

Transgenic Atlantic salmon has the same smell, color, taste, meat density as natural, but at the same time it grows 2 times faster, which significantly reduces its cost. To achieve this, the specialists of the biotech company AquaBounty inserted into the DNA of the Atlantic salmon the gene of the Pacific salmon, which regulates the growth hormone, with the participation of the gene of the ocean burbot (a species similar to the eel).

According to the FDA, such salmon is safe not only as a food product, but also for the environment.

Since there is no requirement for a manufacturer to label GMO products in the United States, the buyer is already eating genetically modified fish, perhaps without even knowing it.

    Cows with reduced flatulence

You will be surprised, but in fact, flatulence in cows is a serious problem. It turns out that the methane emitted by these animals, so useful for humans, is the second most important factor in the production of the greenhouse effect. And cows secrete it as a result of the peculiarities of the digestive system, digesting grass and hay rich in cellulose. In the process of digestion, the bacterial flora that inhabits the digestive tract of animals plays a huge role.

Stephen Moore, professor at the University of Alberta (Canada), is studying the genes responsible for the production of methane in the four stomachs of cows. In his opinion, this will allow, with the help of genetic engineering, to create animals that will be in greater harmony with the environment. So far, this problem has been solved with diet.

    Cows with altered milk quality

A group of scientists from the University of Inner Mongolia (China), using various genetic engineering manipulations with cows, is trying to change the quality of milk. They have already managed to obtain milk with a high content of healthy omega-3 fatty acids, now the production of milk with a low lactose content is on the agenda.

It is lactose intolerance that prevents many people from eating milk and dairy products, and this problem, according to Chinese scientists, can be solved by creating a special GMO breed. The first steps in this direction have already been taken, let's see if scientific innovation becomes a life practice.

    Mosquitoes that die prematurely

British biotech company Oxitec has come up with a unique way to fight Dengue fever, a dangerous disease spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Scientists have created a very special mosquito: females cannot fly, and males are either incapable of reproduction, or, by fertilizing Aedes aegypti females, produce offspring that die before reaching puberty.

In 2009 and 2010, Oxitec conducted hugely successful trials of GMO mosquitoes in Grand Cayman in the Caribbean. The mosquito population decreased by 80% within 3 months.

When the experimenters offered to release their mosquitoes in Florida, where in 2009 there was a documented outbreak of Dengue fever, the local public was outraged and even wrote a petition in which they expressed fears that the death of the Aedes aegypti mosquito could cause irreparable damage to the ecosystem of the peninsula.

But in Brazil, Oxitec planted its insects, and they reduced the number of carriers of the disease by 85%.

Whether this method has far-reaching negative consequences that scientists today cannot assess, or whether the benefits will far outweigh the possible disadvantages, we will learn over time.

    Cat glowing in the dark

And this animal is designed to help scientists in the search for methods to fight AIDS.

There is a feline immunodeficiency virus related to HIV. In 2011, scientists at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (USA) created transgenic kittens by inserting the gene for Rhesus monkeys, capable of generating an antiviral protein, which, in turn, is able to block the immunodeficiency virus. According to preliminary results, the cells of these animals, grown in the laboratory, resist the multiplication of the virus and prevent it from spreading.

Why does a transgenic cat glow in the dark? The fact is that the inserted gene was tagged with the green fluorescent protein of the jellyfish, so that it was easier to trace. During the day, the cat looks normal, and at night it gives off a greenish glow.

Scientists hope their research will lead to therapies for both feline and human AIDS.

Transparent and weightless silk fabrics are the best choice of fashionistas of all times and peoples. China is considered the homeland of silk, and oriental philosophy significantly influenced the development of the culture of using silk. Silk fabric is made from silkworm cocoon fibers. This is a shiny and durable fiber from which fabrics of various density and texture are made. Solid silk fabrics have a unique sheen that does not fade over the years. The material drapes well and is suitable for sewing clothes and accessories. Silk dresses and blouses are always in fashion. Silk is delicacy, wealth and prestige. This reputation for silk determines the value of this fabric.

You can buy silk fabrics in small wholesale in the Leda-fabrics online store. Our fabrics are used by clothing designers and specialists in the procurement of salons, ateliers and sewing industries:

In the manufacture of corporate clothing and tailoring of small series

In sewing outerwear from original fabrics of seasonal collections of fashion houses

Closing the "capsule" of sewing a garment (selection of fabric companions)

Natural silk is a delicate airy fabric, the creation process of which is quite lengthy and laborious, therefore its price is by no means small. Silk is also produced with the addition of synthetic or artificial fibers - their cost will be an order of magnitude lower. But in one thing, all types of this fabric are equal - they are distinguished by a beautiful play, perfect smoothness and, despite all the lightness, strength.

You can buy natural silk in the LEDA online store wholesale and retail at a reasonable cost. The fabric is presented in the catalog by Italian and Korean manufacturers, and the price per meter of silk is indicated in the description of each product sample. The catalog will offer you not only natural, but also mixed types of silk.

    Varieties of silk weaving

There are many types of fabrics where silk is the main thread. A large role in the appointment of the material is also played by the type of weaving of silk thread.

    • Satin is a silk fabric characterized by its characteristic smoothness and luster, due to the special weaving of the threads. It drapes well and is suitable for modeling different types of clothing.
    • Toile is a dense garment, lining fabric; it is also used for sewing ties. It keeps its shape well, thanks to the plain weaving of fibers.
    • Crepe - combines a group of silk, semi-silk, synthetic, woolen fabrics, with a specific weaving of threads. Clothes and costume material practically does not wrinkle, drapes perfectly, has a slight sheen.
    • Chiffon is a mixed type of fabric where silk and cotton threads are intertwined. Light, thin, airy material, presented in matte monochromatic shades or with a pattern.
    • Organza (Devore) is a transparent and thin material, but unlike natural silk, it lacks deep softness. In the production of such fabrics, polyester, silk and viscose fibers are used.
    • Satin is a fairly wear-resistant fabric of a mixed type, from which I sew men's shirts and women's blouses, dresses.

The fabrics listed above, based on silk thread, are only a small part of the possible variations in the material. If you did not find a certain type of fabric in our catalog, you can individually check with the consultants of the online store about the possibility of supplying this or that canvas.
